Live from the Sydney Big Day Out [Bm] 2003.
We're about to bring you a taste of PJ Harvey live on stage.
As she joins us right now, Polly Jean Harvey, who is touring this year with the group that she split up 10 years ago.
Is that right?
That's not quite right.
Not quite right.
What bit of it is right?
You're here.
I did start playing with Rob Ellis 11 years ago, and then he and I split up in 94.
And we didn't speak to each other until 98.
Wow.
Was that because you had an argument, or you were just very busy?
We had very big arguments.
Really?
What was the argument about?
I can't divulge that [G] information.
Publishing and royalties?
Nope.
No?
[Bm] I hope it wasn't about fashion, because one of the things that PJ Harvey is famous for is,
as we're looking here at the cover of [A] Q magazine from a few years ago,
and [C] from seeing you get around the Big Day Out, is [Gbm] an astonishing array of different outfits.
Do you travel with [G] a big semi-trailer load of [B] different clothes, [Gb] different outfits?
Well, [Bm] sometimes I do, yeah.
Never a trailer [Db] load, but definitely a suitcase load.
But this [D] time I've only brought two [Gb] outfits with me, so it's not [Eb] as complicated.
So this is [B] one?
No, this isn't.
Oh, this is not a stage outfit, this is the [Eb] interview outfit?
No, this is my [Bm] walking around the shops outfit.
[Am] Going down to Sainsbury's outfit.
Well, we have a very special present for you.
Oh, is [Bm] that for me?
This is for you.
[G] Of course, it's designed in Australia, but [B] made in China.
I love it.
Oh, [D] absolutely brilliant.
And you can use that to hang up [Em] one of two outfits.
[D] Oh, God, you're good.
Thank you.
Now, with [A]
that coat hanger in mind, we're in fact going to test [E] you on these Australian animals.
You haven't been to Australia very many times, [Em] so I don't know how well you're going to do.
Do you know what this animal is?
That's a koala.
That is a koala, [B] absolutely correct.
[Em] Alright, we'll go with another kind of [B] easy one.
Do you know what this one is?
That's an emu.
An emu, absolutely correct.
Alright, let's go with a tricky one now.
It's a wombat.
It's a wombat.
Alright, [E] do you know what?
An echidna.
Bloody hell.
[Bb] Who's been teaching you all [Em] this?
One of the bands.
Now, Josh Hom from Queens of the Stone Age, we talked to [Bb] him a couple of days ago,
and he said [A] that the one act that he [G] has to check out each day at the Big [Bm] Day Out is your show.
There's been talk about you recording with him in the desert sessions.
Is that just talk, or is there a chance that he might come on one of your records,
or you'll come on one of his?
Yeah, I'm definitely doing the desert sessions.
[G] We go down to do that in February right after this.
Wicked.
So I should be [E] there.
And yeah, we [D] like each other's music, I love his [Em] voice, so you never know what's going to happen.
Until it happens, we can't say it's happened.
[B] And we're both busy people, but, you know, [G] the desire is there.
Is there any chance that either of you will get up during each other's set here at the Big Day Out?
If we ever [Bb] have enough time to rehearse anything, probably.
But [Eb] right now we've tried a couple of times and just haven't had no time, [B] so we'll [G] see.
Are you a fan of his [A] earlier work with Caius at all, or are you more a Queens woman?
I'm afraid I'm much more a Queens woman.
I have listened to [Abm] Caius, but I also [Em] really, really like lots of the desert [Gm] sessions work,
so I'm a big fan of that too. Fair [Ab] enough.
I think you have to be really stoned to listen [G] to Caius, and to be about a 19-year-old boy,
and kind of, yeah, you've been burned by my lighter.
What's the favourite song of yours that you're doing in your set at the moment?
What's the one song that you go, oh yeah, Rid of Me or [D] 50 Foot Queenie?
Gosh, which one am I really enjoying?
Funnily, I mean, it's not in the Big Day Out set.
I'm enjoying playing Hook, actually, which was on the second record,
but it's not in the Big Day Out set.
But in the Big [C] Day Out set, To Bring You My Love is pretty good fun to play right now.
[G] That's not a song that you did with Nick Cave?
That's another song [D] entirely?
No, that was Henry Lee, that duet.
No, To Bring You My Love was on [F] the To Bring You My Love album, 95.
[G] Your most [Gm] recent album, Stories From The City, [C] Stories From The Sea, won the Mercury Prize.
It was released in 2000.
We were just talking before about the release of your next album.
Is there pressure for you to [D] release something as soon as possible?
No, I've not felt any pressure to do that.
I think I'm in the lucky position of having made quite a few records already,
[C] and people just [F] know another record will come when it comes.
I've been very hard on myself this time with what I consider good enough [D] for a new record,
and I've written about 40 songs, but [C] I'm afraid there's only about six that I like right now.
So it could be a little bit longer, but I've started working [G] on it,
and I'll finish it [F] off probably towards the end of this year.
[D] Okay.
I believe you've also been [Ab] talking about collaborating with Captain [Cm] Beefheart.
Is that Gus [Am] Van Zandt?
[C] You've been on the phone to him at all, [G] talking about songwriting? What, Beefheart?
[Dm] Yeah.
Oh yeah, he's a good friend of mine, Don.
Don [F] Van Zandt?
Don Van Vleet.
Van Vleet.
I don't know who Gus Van Zandt is.
Gus Van [C] Zandt's a film director, [F] you fool. Jesus.
[C] All these Vans, they're all, you know, Vans Warped, Van [Dm] Zandt, Van Vleet.
Don [D] Van Vleet.
Don Van Vleet.
I only know him as the [F] captain.
I don't know where the collaboration ideas come from.
That's definitely [C] not on the cards.
Okay.
Don just does not do [F] music anymore.
[C] He's just purely a painter and [G] a drawing artist.
[D] Is there a chance that he might do some cover art for you?
I [C] don't think so.
I think that's all [Fm] speculation really.
No.
[G] Have you hooked up with him personally or [Dm] more of a ring?
Don, what do you think of this track?
We have a [F] phone relationship.
Don [G] loves talking on the phone and [F] he [C] doesn't go out much.
We speak to each other on the phone quite regularly though
[D] and he's definitely an enormous help to [G] me if I've got problems.
He's someone that I will [F] speak to.
Oh, cool.
Obviously his experience in the music business.
If you don't know who Captain Beefheart is [C] or if you think that he's Don Van Zandt,
then go and buy a Captain Beefheart [F] record.
What do you reckon is the best Beefheart record [B] to start with?
Trout Mask [C] Replica or Lick [G] My Decals Off Baby?
I don't know.
[F] It depends.
If you want to ease someone in gently, I'd go for something like Clear [C] Spot
which is one of the more accessible ones [B] probably
or Dock [Dm] at the Radar Station.
But then if you want to just dive in at the deep end, I'd say [G] Trout Mask.
Trout Mask.
Trout Mask Replica.
A great song.
[F] Now we have some catering for you.
This is a bit like the Fred Durst cap moment.
I don't know [D] if you've tried it.
This is an Australian [C] delicacy by the name of a Vegemite sandwich.
Would you like to have a nibble for us?
We've spread it very thinly [F] today.
We haven't chopped it very well either.
We had to cut it up on the plane so we only had a plastic knife sadly.
Does that work for you?
Oh, fantastic.
We [C] have a whole jar here for you to [Am] take away.
Oh, really?
May I?
Thank you.
And we're [Eb] also wondering, seeing as you knew Australian animals so [A] well,
can you name five [F] famous Australians?
Any five Australians.
Mick [D] Harvey. Mick Harvey.
Nick [F] Cave.
Nick Cave.
[B] Nicole Kidman.
Nicole Kidman.
[D] Russell Crowe.
Russell Crowe.
He's actually [C] a Kiwi but we've co-opted him.
Okay.
[Em] Um, um, um, um, um, [F] um.
[Dm] Oh, [Cm] no.
[C] PJ Harvey on the spot, live at the Big Day Out.
The music could name anyone.
Just interrupting my thought.
A tennis player.
Yes.
Very good.
Yes.
Very [G] good.
We have a few of those.
Failed miserably.
Look at that.
[Em] You.
Me.
No, you're not Australian.
No, no.
I'm from out of space.
What about Kylie Minogue or Danny Minogue?
She doesn't count.
She's not a person.
Oh, wow.
Nice.
Nice.
Oh, this is promo moment after [G] promo moment.
See, the music can only name Jason Donovan which is kind of, [Bm] you know,
is that all we've managed to show to [Am] the world in the 200 years
that we've [G] colonised this country so bastardly?
Speaking of bastards, can you name the [A] Australian Prime Minister?
No.
[G] Excellent.
Excellent.
That's what we wanted to hear.
And [Em] very lastly, we should let you just go and pootle around in your shopping [G] gear.
With tennis in mind, you're probably thinking of Leighton Hewitt possibly
or [A] Cash Leighton Hewitt.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
If you were going to play a bit [C] of tennis,
[Em] which member of the Big Day Out would you want to partner with you in doubles?
Josh because he's enormous.
He is bloody enormous.
He's bloody enormous.
Whoa, yeah, that's him.
Whoa.
That's him.
Well, is there anything else you'd like to say to your Australian fans
while we have you here before you wander off into the ether to get on the
phone to Captain [A] and say,
this guy just called you bloody [Eb] Don Van [G] Zant.
[F] I'll just say [E] I apologise for failing [G] miserably to name your Prime Minister.
No, trust me, that's something to be proud of.
I'm [Em] just a musician.
What can I do?
Exactly, exactly.
[Am] Musicians, they rule the world.
Apology and hubby, thanks for talking to us.
[G] No problem.
We look forward to your next record and in the meantime,
lick my legs, I'm on fire.
You're not rid of me.
We'll be here with you for the next three and a half hours.
Let's take a [Em] look at PJ Harvey live on stage right now.
Good fortune live here at the Big Day Out 2003.
Thank [Am] you, PJ.

_ [G] Your most [Gm] recent album, Stories From The City, [C] Stories From The Sea, won the Mercury Prize.
_ _ [C] You've been on the phone to him at all, [G] talking about songwriting?
Don [G] loves talking on the phone and [F] he _ [C] doesn't go out much.
_ We've spread it very thinly [F] today.
We haven't chopped it very well either.
We had to cut it up on the plane so we only had a plastic knife sadly.
Does that work for you?
Oh, fantastic.
We [C] have a whole jar here for you to [Am] take away.
Oh, really?
May I?
Thank you.
And we're [Eb] also wondering, seeing as you knew Australian animals so [A] well,
can you name five [F] famous Australians?
Any five Australians.
Mick [D] Harvey. Mick Harvey.
Nick [F] Cave.
Nick Cave.
[B] Nicole Kidman.
Nicole Kidman.
[D] Russell Crowe.
Russell Crowe.
He's actually [C] a Kiwi but we've co-opted him.
Okay.
[Em] Um, um, um, um, um, [F] um.
_ _ _ _ [Dm] Oh, [Cm] no.
_ [C] PJ Harvey on the spot, live at the Big Day Out.
_ No.
_ [F] I'll just say [E] I apologise for failing [G] miserably to name your Prime Minister.
Thank you.
_ [Db] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Do you travel with [G] a big semi-trailer load of [B] _ different clothes, [Gb] different outfits?
Funnily, I mean, it's not in the Big Day Out set.
I'm enjoying playing Hook, actually, which was on the second record,
