[F] Hello, my name is Katie P.
Welcome to the Charlotte Street Hotel in Soho, London.
We're here as part of the Xtival experience for Xbox Live to have a little chat with Placebo.
They've got a brand new album coming out as well as a string of UK dates and some festival appearances ready to go.
[Eb] So let's go have a [F] chat.
[Eb] [F] The end of the century.
[Eb] [F] I said my [Eb] goodbyes.
For [F] what it's worth I always aimed to please.
[Eb] [F] But I'm nearly [Eb] dying for [F] what it's worth.
Hi Placebo, welcome to the Xtival experience as part of Xbox Live.
[N] Can I just point out that I'll live in this hotel room.
A new album Battle for the Sun is going to be out [F] in June.
What's the kind of anticipation been like?
Have people been getting excited about it?
[N] I think people have been getting excited about it because they can mistakenly think that we've been away for three years
and they don't really understand that two of those years we've [F] spent on the road and then needed to have a little bit of time off.
It takes about six months to make a record as well.
But the anticipation is in us as well.
I guess we kind of really want to get it out there so that we can see if all our [Eb] hopes [F] and ambitions come true.
[Eb] [Fm] Your God shaped hole tonight.
[F] Who won it?
It's [Eb] definitely a bit different from what [F] we've done in the past.
But every album has been that way.
There's been a change of character on each record and that's kind of part of our identity.
[Eb] It's necessary for us in order to continue to try and [F] every time we make a new record
to [C] push the boundaries of our own identity, of our sound in different directions
[Gbm] [Ab] and enlarge our musical palette I suppose.
We're using horn sections on this record which we've never really done before.
I think a lot of people [Eb] who like rock [F] music, that idea sort of scares them a bit.
[Eb] [F]
[Eb]
[Fm]
I read in [F] Crying Magazine this week that the new album is somewhat of a happier experience for the [Fm] band.
Is that right?
It [G] was a [F] happier process [Eb] recording it.
Everything's relative in [F] Placebo World and there's more hope on this record
and there's more optimism on this record than there was on the last one.
But [Fm] I don't think you could really get darker than the last [Eb] one
simply in terms of what it explored emotionally.
[F] So a happier experience, not necessarily a kind of bubbling dance around
Well no, it's not Can't Get You Out of My Head.
It still deals with weighty and meaty subjects I suppose.
It's serious.
[Bb] It's not designed to be escapist in any way.
But looking back on [Gb] Meds which we felt was quite claustrophobic and quite sombre,
very much like a black and white grainy film perhaps.
Steph and I felt that this time around we wanted to do something that had more hope in it
and that actually had more colour [Dm] in it.
So we reacted against the black and white film and tried to go 70mm widescreen Technicolor on this [Bb] one.
It's the sound of a band that's happy to be creative again
and happy to be creative with the personnel that exists within the band
and the band that feels creatively unselfconscious which is really important.

You've toured the UK a few times now.
How do you [E] find the fans' reaction in general?
[Dm] [G] Oh yeah, we've always had
well we started here so we cut our teeth as a live [Bb] band playing around Camden.
[C]
So it's very much [Bb] part of our history and it's kind of where we come from.
[Gm] So it's good.
[Dm] We always have really energetic [Am] shows and the [Bb] audiences are always really generous.
