[F] [Eb] Hey there everybody, [Cm] welcome back to [F] HD Piano, this [Eb] is Jeff.
Today we're going to be learning [Cm] the classic [Dm] duet, [Cm] Heart and Soul.
The original of this was written [N] by Hoagy Carmichael and Frank Losser, which is much
more complex than what we're about to learn.
Today we're just going to learn the classic duet part, which has the low part and the
high part on the piano.
And I'm going to ask for my man Dan's help on this one.
So Dan, why don't you start us off with [C] the low part.
Okay, one, two, ready, go.
[Am]
[F] [G] [C] [Am]
[F] Here's the [G] high part.
[C]
[Am] [F] [G] [C]
[Am] [F] [G] [C]
[Am] [F] [G] [C]
[Am] [F] [G] [C]
Alright, that was fun.
Take it from here Jeff, I'll see you later.
Alright, so in this lesson we're going to learn the low duet part, what Dan just played.
Next lesson we're going to learn the high part and then the last lesson we're going
to put it all together in a special hybrid part that you can play solo piano and really
impress your friends.
Let's check out that [Abm] low part though.
So [C] first, let's do the chords.
We have a C chord to start.
C in the left hand, C, E, G in the right hand.
We're going to play this one in the key of C.
Next chord, [Am]
nice and easy, A minor, still in root [A] position.
A in the [Am] left, A, C, E in the right.
[F]
F chord is the third chord.
F in the left, F, A, C in the right.
And finally our [G] fourth chord is a G chord.
All these chords are in root position.
G in the left, G, B, D in the right.
Let's go over those [C] chords one more time.
C,
[Am] A minor, [F]
F, [G]
and G.
[C] Let's go over fingering really quickly.
For the first chord, I'm doing 1, 3, 5.
Second [Am] chord, also 1, 3, 5.
Check out what I do for the F [F] chord though.
Going to do a 1, 2, 4.
And this is going to help me switch to the G a little easier.
So if I go 1, 2, 4 [G] here, and I go 1, 3, 5 on [F] the G, it makes it a little easier.
[G]
All right, so we got the chords, the fingerings, now the rhythm.
Check out what the rhythm is [C] going to be.
[Am] [F] [G]
[C] So we're going to play two left hand notes, and then two right hand chords.
And our rhythm is going to be swung eighth notes, which
means we have a long eighth note followed by a short eighth note.
1 and 2 and, try that with me.
1 and 2 and, one more time.
1 and 2 and.
Let's try that same rhythm on the A [A] minor.
1 [Am] and 2 and.
Same [F] rhythm on F and G.
[G] Let's put all [Ab] that together nice and [C] slow.
1 and 2 [A] and 3 [Am] and 4.
[F] 1 and 2 [G] and 3 and 4 and [C] 1.
All right, so I want you to pause that and rewind that
so you can get that at that nice, slow tempo.
Let's bump up the tempo just by a few clicks here.
[A] [Am] [F]
[G] [C] [Am]
[F] [G]
[C] And let's finish at the tempo that I think
would be a good spot to play this one as a duet with.
[Am] [F]
[G] [C] [Am]
[F] [G] [C]
[Ab] And there you go.
That's the low duet part for the classic Heart and Soul.
Like I mentioned before, next lesson we're
going to be doing the high melodic part.
[D] [Gm]
And then in the lesson following that, I'm
going to teach you how to play both parts at once.
[F] So you can really impress your friends and show them
how you can play a duet all by [Eb] yourself.
Excellent work, everyone.
