As far as women were concerned, and punk being any kind of liberating factor for them, _
for me it was all embodied in the work of one particular female,
and that was Polly Styrene from X-Ray Specs.
Punk rock had [E] embraced polyurethane and [B] polysexual ideals.
[G] Next on the guest list was [Em] Polly Styrene.
[A] First band I actually saw physically paid to see was [Em] X-Ray Specs.
They were [Abm] brilliant.
They were just [G] like this little girl with braces on her teeth screaming.
[A] _ _ _ _ _ _ [G] _
_ [A] _ _ [G] _ _ [A] _ _
[E] The girl [A] singer, the way her voice was, the screaming, [E] the energy.
_ [A] _
She was a trained opera singer, but she just used her voice,
she just subverted her voice [G] and used it as [A] a weapon almost.
_ _ _ [G] _ _ [A] _
_ _ I already kind of had an [E] idea of the kind of thing that I wanted to do,
and when I saw [A] the pistols it meant that it was [G] possible.
_ _ [A] _ _ Then they came out with a [F] sound and [E] attitude and a [A] whole energy
that [E] is just not relating [D] to anything around it.
It's [A] perv.
_ [G] _
_ _ Polly Styrene I just thought was like a breath of fresh air.
She just looked brilliant.
[A] _ Their look [G] and everything about them, their whole [D] attitude and their bearing
expressed as [A] much about them as the [G] songs they wrote did.
I'll never forget seeing her singing with this little soldier's hat [A] on
and a brace, really [E] thick braces on her teeth. _
_ _ [A] _ _ [G] _ _ [A] _ _
_ [C] [G] The way that she marched up and down stage and the way [A] that she had half a military uniform on,
an amazing amount of care went into the way that she [G] looked.
I didn't put my braces [A] on for [G] fashion, I actually [A] had to wear braces,
[G] _
and I [A] was quite goofy.
To go with it, I just thought I couldn't really wear my sort of 70s
[E] curly Carly Simon hairdos [D] anymore,
so [A] I thought, well, I'll just change my look to go with my [C] braces.
[E] _

_ _ _ [C] _ _ _ [Em] Interesting thing about Polly's lyrics [Ab] is I think she was [E] ahead of her time
in that she was dealing with [G] eco issues [Em] a good 15, [Am] 20 years before [D] it became [A] really mainstream.
It was all very much about the consumer [C] society and the [D] expectations one had.
[E] How we're sort of driven by advertising and driven by [C] consumerism.
The commerciality of the city, [E] the brightness and the garishness of it really,
and the _ _ [Cm] _ _
[E] plasticness of it really, really hit me in a very strong way.
She didn't seem [D] very happy [C] with the notion that you should wear deodorant
and buy [A] all the commodities that were advertised on TV,
and I think she was very aware [G] that all of it was quite [A] unnecessary.

[A] _ _ _ _ [F] _ _ _ _
[G] _ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _ [Eb] _

_ _ _ It's such a shame really that X-Ray Specs, their time [Dm] was very short-lived.
I mean, they just [D] sort of did one great album and [G] then [A] imploded.
_ _ _ [F] _ _ _ _ [G] _
_ _ [D] A true little individual [E]
who got [G] caught up in this whole thing and [E] loved it [G] immensely,
but I couldn't ever say she [A] was part of the punk scene, [D] funny enough.
[A] I never felt that way.
She was on her [D] own somewhere, I'm not quite sure where.
[A]
I'm here [G] with my _ [A] _
pussy.
I [D] think she was very much of a mom [A] really, [G] but _ I don't think she was ever in it [Eb] for the long term.
I don't think she had a better feeling at the time.
