[D] Jack, please [C] tell your
[G] Hello, Chrissy.
I'm sorry.
How are you?
[D] Welcome to the [Eb] show.
Can you explain to our viewers [B] what's the song about, two [A] thousand miles?
[G] No.
I'll try.
[Gb] It's really about Father Christmas.
[Eb] No, it's not.
[B]
No?
[Am] What's it about?
[G] I wish you hadn't [A] asked me that.
It's really just about someone who's gone, [Gm] really.
And let's just say [G] it's Father Christmas.
[Eb] Okay.
The brief answers had a difficult year [Gb] and a half.
What happened?
[C]
[Gb] [D] Well, Martin, you want to help me out on this?
Sure.
After [Gbm] we finished an eight-month world tour, [A]
we took a couple months off.
And [G] then we [Eb]
[Gb] fired our bass player, Pete.
And then two [D] days after that, [Db] our guitar player died.
[A]
So we [G]
went into the studio with some friends of ours as session players
and made the Chang Gang single.
[Fm] And then
[Em] We did the Chang Gang single, [B] actually.
We did that in September [Cm] last year.
So it's over a year ago we did [A] Chang Gang.
And then [B]
approaching Christmas, then, we [A] auditioned [Gm]
guitarists, basically.
[A] And fortunately, Jimmy had found somebody who [Gb] he [Cm] thought was really good.
[Bb] It was Robbie McIntosh, who we have in the band now.
So we auditioned, [B] and Robbie was the [Cm] first person.
He was the starting point on [Ab] auditioning [Bb] guitarists.
[A] So [C] it seemed the right thing to do.
[B] Maybe because Jimmy had put his stamp on that person and [Ab] said,
[Bb] this is the [A] person I wanted to be [F] on the road with.
We still [Gb] needed a bass player, so [D] he [F] brought a mate of his [D] along.
He's our bass player now.
[G] And then
[Ab] Pete [Gb] died.
And [Gm] that's it.
We were actually recording [A] the album at the time.
[Bb] We'd been in the [A] studio recording before Christmas.
It [Bb] was [A] March this year [Gb] that Pete died.
So it was during [A] the recording of the album, [G] actually.
Chrissie, will 1984 be a better year for The Pretenders?
What do you expect?
Unless Martin dies, it should be, yeah.
And if not?
No.
[Eb]
In a way, we're sort of getting paid for what [Cm] we've done, in my opinion.
Because we're going out on the road in 1984.
[B]
And we haven't done that properly [Bb] since the beginning of 82.
[C] So it's been a long layoff.
And we're going on the road and we'll be over [A] in Holland, hopefully.
It's hot to trot [Eb] now, and we really want to get back on the road.
We're very [Gb] grateful that we've [G] got a band together and [Eb] we can go back out, really.
[Gb] That we've been able to hold this thing together.
I hope it will be a better year for you.
Thank you very much for coming to the studio.
Cheers.
