So [F#] hi, it's Brother Wayne here with Brother [Bm] William.
And today we're going to take a look at the solo I played on the MC Fudge recording of
Looking at You.
This is the Atlantic Records [N] version of the solo.
There's a couple other ones around.
The original single is completely different.
And in point of fact, every time I've ever played the song, it is completely different.
That's the kind of way that we do it.
The idea was that I really wanted to show off and do something [Em] unique and special.
So this is what I think I did.
[E] I went
[G]
[B] [A]
[E]
[A] [F#] [Em]
[F#]
[G]
[F#] Close.
Not exactly right, but close enough.
So that's basically the movements of it.
I know you've worked on it a little bit.
So I'll just play the rhythm guitar part and you can give that a try.
[D]
[E] [D] [F#]
[B] [D] [Em]
[B]
[Em] [D] [Em] [G]
[E]
These solos are improvised, you know, so it's really however you feel it.
[Em] But the rest of it, you know, all this
[A]
[D] The idea [Em] is you're just building to a peak.
And in the arrangement [F] back then in the band, we knew that [F#] when I got that solo to that
point, both when
If everyone was [F] listening to me and watching me, they'd know [F#] that that was going to be
where the song would break back down and Tyner would start the second verse.
So this [D] one, it's
This is all Chuck Berry.
Stole everything I know from Chuck Berry.
[E]
So it [B] starts with just this kind of E minor on the
[Em]
[D] [F#] [C]
[E]
[Em]
[F#]
[C] [E]
[E] [A]
And it's
I have a lot more gain on that solo, so the notes ring out longer.
But that's basically it.
It's a [Bm] lot of this.
[Em]
This
[G] [E] The trick, I think, there is just to [Em] keep your tempo.
Make sure you're on top of the beat [F#] and you're pushing it a little bit.
You're a little bit ahead of the beat on that.
[D] So you're really [F#] forcing those notes, [E]
forcing everything forward.
All right, Will.
So these flourishes [A] here, you just let them rip.
See what you can come up with them.
[G] [E]
[Em] [D] [Em]
[D] [Em] [D]
[E] [Dm] [Em]
[Em] [N] That's where we all start.
This is the part about playing the guitar that's not fun.
And it's not fun to listen to.
It's just [F#] you have to train your fingers to do the things [Gm] that you need them to do just
by [B] doing it over and over.
[E] I mean, even I don't do it so great a lot of the time.
And I'm very
[A] [Em] Yeah, you're not striking every note.
You're just striking the top note.
Yeah, and the finger carries the note.
That's it.
[G] All right.
So this [Em] is just basically a compilation of the first two solos together.
[G#] It starts with this feedback here.
[D] [A] G.
F sharp. [B] F sharp.
[D]
[A]
[A] [E]
[B]
[G] [F#]
[G]
[Bm] [E]
[G] [E] Although trilling off into the [Em] sunset.
[D] [Em]
[G] [Em] [E] [Em]
[D]
[G] One thing that will help you is get more gain on your sound.
If you have more gain, [N]
you'll get away from that kind of plunky tone and you'll get more
of that smooth distorted, which will actually make this stuff sound a little bit better.
Absolutely.
Okay.
So that's it.
We're going to meet up again in one week.
You're going to go rehearse.
Absolutely.
And we'll [G#] put part two on [Gm]
a week from now.
Good luck.
Happy trills.
[F#] Okay, here's
I'm going to try to play the solos [E]
[B] uninterrupted.
So this will be a close-up on my hands.
[E] [D] [E]
