Hi, my name is Johan van [G] Peris.
I am the Director of Liturgy at the Basilica of St.
Mary in
[Am] Minneapolis.
Today we will meditate [G] on the Psalm for the third Sunday of Lent, [C] Psalm 19.
[Em] One of the great gifts of the Psalms is that they give us [Am] words to voice any [G] experience
we may have as a human being.
[Dm] They give us words of praise, words [G] of prayer, even words
of [Dm] lament.
Truly, any human [G] experience is represented in the Psalms.
[C] Now the Psalms
not only [G] affirm us, the Psalms also [Am] challenge us.
[C] Just imagine [F] on a given Sunday you go
to church and [C] you are in a great place, happy, ready to give [G] thanks to God, [Am] except on that
particular Sunday the Psalm [G] used is a Psalm of lament.
[Dm] Obviously, this particular Psalm
does [G] not give voice to your own experience, [Dm] but it does give voice to the experience [G] maybe
of the person [C] sitting next to you [G] [C] or to the person who lives under the bridge.
[G] Lament
because this person [Am] is lonely, is sad, [F] is sick.
On [C] that Sunday, though you may be [G] rejoicing,
the Psalm of [Em] lament [Am] calls you to solidarity, calls you [G] to pray for the other person, [Dm] calls
you to act on their behalf.
[G] The first reading read on the third [Dm] Sunday of Lent speaks about God's [G] commandments, about
God's laws.
[Dm] Psalm 19 sings the [G] praises of God's [Am] laws.
[G] [C] In today's society, law does not
[G] really have all that positive [Em] of a reaction.
[Am]
In the Psalm, [F] the law of God is praised.
[C] The
Psalmist does not see [G] God's law as restrictive or demeaning.
[Am] On the contrary, the [G] Psalmist
sees God's law as freeing, [Dm] as liberating, as something [G] beautiful, pure as gold, and
[Dm] sweet as honey.
[G] The law of the Lord are [C] directives to live a full [G] and divinely inspired life.
[C] The laws exist like [F] the Psalms to mold us into that person God wants us [C] to be.
