Back when Al Hurricane first introduced New Mexico music to the Southwest,
there weren't many venues that would allow New Mexico music acts to perform.
This led Al, along [N] with his brother Tiny Mori and mother Benny Sanchez,
to acquire their own nightclub, which [F#] was called The Far [B] West.
Here they [C] would showcase New Mexico [A#] music and the most famous [E] Latino acts of the time.
Al and his family first introduced famous stars like Selena to New Mexico [F#] audiences at The Far West.
In [N] fact, Selena recorded one of Al's compositions, Sentimiento.
One of New Mexico's most famous groups, The Purple Haze,
made The Far West their base to play New Mexico music to their many fans.
One of the Salazar brothers, Felix, would say, quote,
When Al Hurricane and Tiny Mori [A#] would go to Española and play the Legion [G#] Hut,
we, the Salazar brothers, would [F#] sit at the steps of the stage most of the night
[D] and watch how they would play, how they'd [N] sing, and what kind of instruments they played.
Tonight, we are honored to have one of the Salazar brothers with us,
one of New Mexico's music legends, one of the original members of The Purple Haze.
