And [Fm] everything's just such amazing inspiring of work speaking of inspiring
We'd like to invite a [Ab] special guest and purpose of words advisory member Jeremy Yoon onto the stage
Jeremy is a high school freshman
guitarist songwriter co-founder of the band WJM which has appeared in
Live in front of millions of viewers on TV shows like NBC's Little Big Shots and the European TV show Super Kids
WJM has performed for a lot of corporations and charities including YouTube Salesforce
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society VH1's Save the Music Foundation and
Because that wasn't enough apparently has donated over $50,000 to children's causes.
It's a high school freshman
Yeah, Wow is anyone else in the room like super self-conscious now about how you spent your teenage years
Yes, Jeremy is second only to teenagers performing heroic events he's only second to spider-man that's it.
Yeah, I'm not sure you second
He doesn't even need a mask to do good things.
No.
Yeah, Captain America called and said hey
Do you want to join the Avengers Jeremy?
He's like, I'm booked.
I'm on tour
WJM was awarded the
[Fm] 2016 Youth Social Activism Award at the Nova summit held in the United Nations
General Assembly now as we welcome Jeremy to the stage
We'd also like to introduce his band WJM through this video

Thank you guys
Thank you guys for having me today, man.
I miss those days
50 years ago my grandfather appeared on a CBS national TV program for his work of inserting public education into pop songs
Work that later landed him a career at the World Bank to collaborate with artists around the globe for social impact
His work was art of the prophecy that pop culture through artists that capture the public imagination can bring light to the world
They proved what we already know in our hearts that art can change the world
But technology can change the world too
The same technologies that are putting so much value at our fingertips are also challenging our values
As societies evolved from small communities into a global village our interconnectedness has made human relationships more transactional and fragile
It's now more like the super tramp song goodbye stranger than the Steven Stills song love the one you're with
Too often now people bait each other for attention votes or clicks
Often with fake news or fake relevance as if that isn't isolating enough
Technology algorithms divide us into self brainwashed echo chambers that make us listen to each other even less
Mindfulness used to mean being mindful of other people and now it's become a self-help movement
Advice columns tell us to love ourselves
Advocacy means speaking up for others and now schools teach self-advocacy as a
Society we've made up new concepts like self-care
self-service and selfies
No wonder despite being more connected than ever people feel alienated and alone
Technology connects us, but how will it unite us?
Are we going to use our connecting powers to spread hate and fear or to spread the very best of our human values?
I'd like to leave you guys with a few thoughts
The foundation of changing the world is converting base statements into I statements
This takes a depressing third-person situation and turns it into a personal responsibility and an action item
The statement can music change the world can be restated as can we help change the world through music?
My grandpa taught me that it's not just the message that matters, but also how it's delivered
Neurotrans shows that people respond to the same message differently depending on the context who said it
How it was said which ear heard it and so on
notably words put to music activate the same brain reflex as when a child hears a mom's voice a
critical source of emotional comfort and social learners
That song you heard in the beginning we are one is part of our collaboration with the producers behind Beyonce and train
songs for the age of social division
It's clear that once we are driven by purpose as this community is
The opportunity to positively impact the world through technology is greater than ever
Art and pop culture can lead the way once again
So I stand before you to add my commitment to yours and with a heart full of hope I hereby pledge
$10,000 toward the future the purpose awards to support artists who use their gift to bring meaning and purpose to us all
Technology connects us and humans will unite us.
Thank you
