[D] Hello, this is Q Magazine backstage at the [F] 2015 Q [D] Awards.
We're joined by winners of
the [F] Q Icon Award, Duran Duran.
Congratulations, [G] gentlemen.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
[A] Thank you, Q Magazine.
[Bb] Thank you, music.
So who were your icons first [Bbm] off when you were starting out?
Bowie.
Yeah.
Lennon.
[D] Elvis.
Roxy Music.
I'm thinking Mike Bowling.
Kraftwerk.
[A] Gary Newman.
Mike Bowling.
Gary Newman, exactly.
Gary [Bb] Newman. Paddy Smith.
Yeah.
[D] Sex Pistols.
Clash.
Yeah.
We've got a Gary Newman and a Sex Pistol in today.
Have you said hello?
[Bb] I know.
Yeah.
[G] I mean, in terms of like your [Dm] career then, I mean, when you were first starting out, [E] how
important was it to you to project not just the music, but also the image of the band [N] and
that sort of sense of who you guys were?
It was very important when we started.
It was almost [F] as important as the music, I think.
I mean, [A] I got [Bb] the job because of my trousers.
Yeah.
[D] For sure.
And his name, which we didn't believe [Em] was real at the time, but [D] hey.
It's true.
I mean, I don't know whether that's an English thing.
[A] I think we very much connect
with, we like our clobber, you know, the English were [Gb] very clothes oriented.
But I
find that I tend to [G] identify with individuals rather than songs.
I found that as a kid growing
up, you know.
I [Dm] would really get into an artist and then I would just like the stuff [D] they
did as opposed [E] to it being on a song by [Bb] song basis.
I still don't think I've ever bought an album that I didn't like something about the album
cover.
That's how shallow we are.
[G] Yeah.
Because actually, if you relate [Am] to an artist, you usually relate [Gb] to their aesthetic.
And their ideas [F] and where they're coming from and their attitude, potentially their girlfriend.
Yeah.
So it was very important for us.
We grew up in the [Bb] 70s, punk rock, glam rock.
[Ab] We were
never going to be a band.
There you go.
[F] We didn't care about that.
There's a headline, Duran Duran, the [Em] band that always judges the book by its [Bb] cover.
Yes.
It's that sense of creating a world, which I [Dm] think Duran did incredibly well.
I think, [G] well, I think also, you know, if you [Bb] get the heart of it right, you get the
music right and you get [F] the right vibe within the band, [G] then that kind of spreads out.
It's
like a [Bb] fountainhead and it spreads out to [Ab] everybody else you work with.
So the [Am] design
team is in place and the [D] clothing's right.
It just makes sense.
You know, the whole project
is one thing.
Now, bringing it right up to date, you've just released a new [Gb] record.
It was rumoured
for a [Dm] while, I think it was like 2013, that was the first time we heard there might be
an album.
What's gone into it?
You guys just had to get it just right?
Is that the thing?
We did have to get it just right, actually, because I think the last record was very,
very well accepted and we kind of [Db] set the bar, it was pretty high again.
So [Dm] we went
in and we thought, this is really going to be something outstanding.
And I think Nick
was the one that said, you know, let's just not have a cut off point [B] on this album.
Let's
[Em] just go until we've got [D] the record that we want.
And [A] it was two years plus in the end.
[D] We think we've got a good piece of work.
[C] So you're very happy with the [G] results?
[G] I love it.
I mean, I'm still playing it at night time before I go to bed, [Dm] put the earphones
in and put the album on.
That's why you haven't forgotten any of the lyrics so far on this.
It's the [G] best way to learn them, darling.
[E] Also, I think it's reassuring being here on a day like [F] today, we're believers in the [E] album.
We still believe in the album and that journey that the listener can take.
And that's what
we want the listener to [Dm] take, the journey of this Paper [G] Gods album during the making
of the album.
I mean, if [Gm] we heard it once, we heard it 50 [Dm] times a year.
Nobody listens
[N] to albums anymore, you know, and all of that.
But that's how
[Dm] we've been [C] raised.
You know, it's funny about that to me.
[Ab] You wouldn't do it to a movie, would you?
You
wouldn't [Am] go and put it on shuffle.
[A] I mean, really, can you imagine [E] what a clockwork orange
would look like on [Dm] shuffle?
I agree.
[B]
[Gm] [Em] I think, you know, Q Magazine is really [D] big on albums.
[A] And then what you said
about people saying, nobody listens to albums anymore.
Yeah, I heard that too.
But I'm getting
so much [Gb] feedback on the little bit of social media [D] I do from people who are listening to
the album.
They're putting on beginning and listen to the whole thing right through to the end.
[F] And the other thing that Q Magazine's like is, of course, gigs.
And you've been playing
some big ones that Best of All, obviously, recently.
How was [Dm] that?
Best of All was absolutely amazing.
I mean, [D] it's great.
I love playing [F] shows where you've
got girls sitting on their [Eb] boyfriend's shoulders or boyfriends sitting on their girlfriend's shoulders, etc.
[G] Or girlfriends sitting on their girlfriend's shoulders.
Exactly.
Yes.
I mean, there [D] you go.
All of that stuff.
It was [G] really wonderful for us.
We really felt like we [Dm] connected with a [D] new audience, actually.
And so [C] obviously, with the album coming out, what's next?
More touring?
[Gm] More shows?
Yeah.
We're touring the UK [Dm] in December, actually.
November.
[Ab] 28th of November, I think, [Gb] we open in Manchester.
Very [Dm] excited.
It's always exciting to get
back on the road in [A] England.
So what's the men out for?
[Bb] Yeah.
And how is the new [Gb] stuff going to fit into the set?
Have you sorted [G] that out yet?
Yeah.
We've been trying it out so far.
And we [B] found out, like Roger said, that Pressure
Off fits in right in the sort of [F] notorious planet Earth pocket.
We're playing One of
the [Dm] Chances at the moment.
Last Night in [G] the City, which is a [Bb] real kind of up-tempo, [B] disco,
EDM [A] stomper, really.
It feels like the best song in the set when we play it.
I mean, the
crowd got absolutely bananas.
We're lucky.
And we worked hard.
[Bb] QI [A] Con winners, and apparently now an EDM band.
Duran Duran, congratulations.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.

would look like on [Dm] shuffle?
I agree.
[B] _ _ _
[Gm] _ [Em] I think, you know, Q Magazine is really [D] big on albums.
_ [A] And _ then what you said
about people saying, nobody listens to albums anymore.
_ _ [G] _ Or girlfriends sitting on their girlfriend's shoulders.
Exactly.
It's always exciting to get
back on the road in [A] _ England.
[Bb] _ _ QI [A] Con winners, and apparently now an EDM band.
Duran Duran, congratulations.
Thank you.
Thank you very much. _ _ _ _
