This lick of [A#] the month is from Queen's Tie Your Mother Down.
No offense mom.
It's a very cool and classic and [B] original lick done by Brian May that's not real hard
to do if you know what's going [F#] on with the lick.
[Am] Let's move in close.
We're just going to take our [Em] first finger and hold down an A chord right there at the second fret.
Okay.
You're going to use your [B] first finger to hold the [E] chord down [C] and you're going to use your
second finger to hammer on a C note.
[F#] Hammering pull off.
So we're going to have to go [A] open A there.
So that's how you do it.
So you got [A#] this.
You're holding this down and you're [C] hammering, [C#m]
pulling down [Am] a little bit and pulling off.
Okay.
That's what you're trying to get.
Now I've got my amp set up [F#] so that I've got a slight distortion.
Don't want a lot of distortion.
Just enough to get some rock sound in there.
If you put too [Gm] much distortion on [C] there, the whole thing just blots out.
[Am] You want to be able to hear your chords because you're going to have to play some [Em] chords in
this and the chords, [G] [D] [G] full chords, [Em] so you want to be able to hear those chord notes.
[Bm] So we're holding this [A] down, striking all the strings.
Now [Em] we're going to come up here so you can see where I'm [A] picking.
The [Em] picking style is going to be like [A] this.
[Am] The only strings we're using are these.
[A#] [C] The second, third, fourth and fifth strings.
We're not doing much with the E [E] strings.
They're not in the way, [F#] but we want to emphasize the inner strings in [Em] here.
You know, just kind of avoid the E strings and [F#] just come in and do the second, third,
fourth and fifth string when you [A] strum.
So you're going to strum like this.
Now I thought that was kind [Em] of unique, the way that's done [A] with the
If you watch [C] any of the Rock Brian May videos on this [E] song, you'll see him just strumming
up and down, [Am] just like that.
He's not doing this.
[G] There's a way you can do [Am] this, but you don't get the high sound when you come up, like that.
So you want to go,
[A] pull off of that C.
So we're going to go one, two, four, one, two.
[G] [D]
[Am] Okay, and you're going to do that.
[C] That's going to be [E] done six times before you [F#] go to the chords, okay?
Now, let's go to the chords and see what the chords are going to be.
The first chord is an A, of [A] course.
[A#] And when you get ready to do your vamp chords, you're [G] going to be playing a G.
Textbook G chord.
A D chord.
[D]
C add [Em] nine.
[C] Now your [Em] C add nine is made, you hold your two fingers down there like that.
Come in with your second finger [N] and put it on a C at the third fret.
And then come in with your first finger and put it on an E at [C] the second fret.
Okay, so you've got a C add nine.
And your last chord, now you're going to leave your fingers down here.
Take this finger up, [B] bring your first finger up to the B note.
And you've got a B note for your bass.
And you've got a G chord [G] down here.
G chord.
This is called a G slash B.
G chord.
And a B bass note.
Okay, so you've got this.
Right there.
So the chords are again, are G.
[D] D.
[G] C [C] add nine.
[G] G slash B.
And then you're [A] back down to your groove chords.
So you go.
[Am]
[G] [D] [C] [G]

[G] [D] [C] [G] [Am]
And [F#] that's Tie Your Mother Down.
Now let's go to the board and look at the chords and see what the chords look like on a grid.
[Em] Here's what the chords look like on paper.
First we've [D#] got our A chord here where we're holding [A] our A.
And we're pulling off the C note.

And then our next chord is our [D] G, [G] textbook G there.
And then our D.
