Hi folks, I'm Ian Walsh with OnlineLessonVideos.com.
Today we're working on a tune called Ragtime Annie.
This is a request that came into the site and I'm happy to play it for you.
It's in the key of D and there's some A chords and some G chords
and some nice little fun shuffle bowing.
Here's a sample of me playing it at 100 beats per minute.

[F#m] Okay, now you have an idea of what we're going to be learning today.
Let's get right into it.
To start off, I'm going to show you some patterning
that you can do on the A and the D string.
We'll break this down note by note, but here's some patterning you want to use.
Your F sharp on the D string, right there, your second finger,
and your open A and a B.
[B]
If you were just playing this as a double stop, these two [F#] fingered notes here,
that would be a B minor double stop, or a B, just a B double stop in general.
It could be minor or major.
[B] We're going to use this pattern and that is really what the first part of this tune is about.
We have some pick up notes here.
[D]
[C] Just those first two, the F to the E, and then the D is going to be our first note.
[F#m] This little bit we can cycle through and get very used to the bowing pattern and the note pattern.
You can see I leave my F sharp down on the D string
and alternate between the B and the open A.
Really, without the bow on there, this is what it kind of looks like.
If I were to count us in with the pick up notes and everything,
it would be 1, 2, 3.
[E] 1, 2, 3.
[Bm]
1, 2, 3.
[Bm] [F#m]
[D] I'm not using a lot of bow to get this sound.
My sound is actually kind of quiet right now.
You could play a heavier bow and use more of your bow.
I like staying to the mid section of my bow to the top half for this little bit.
You'll notice if you look at my bowing hand, it's just doing a little rocking motion like [Bm] this.
[F#m]
[G#] That's something you might want to practice.
Just cycle through this a bunch and get that down.
When we move to the 5 chord of the A, which is coming up here,
we almost do [F#] the same thing.
[A] You can practice it on either string.
It's not going to be exactly like that when we get there,
but you can just get used to it if you get tired of the two middle strings.
Move over here.
[D]
[A] Anyway, it's good to have a solid foundation and to know what you're doing there.
Let me take you through a few more notes.
We start off, like I said, with the pick-ups.
That's F, E, and then the D.
[E] Then we [Bm] [F#m]
use [Bm] [D] that same kind of pick-up note again, moving down the scale.
[F#m] Then we have a quick broken-up set of notes here.
Let me show you how that comes into play.
[F#] [Bm] [F#m]
[Bm] [B] [D]
One more time.
One, [F#] two, three.
