what I think it is.
Is there any reason why?
Just keep it shut?
[Bm] [G#] Yeah.
[A#] [A]
So you probably know the story [F] of my orange [D] 6120 guitar.
[G] That was stolen from Page One [A] Studio.
That's a [Am] guitar I played on [D] Shaken All Over and Taking [C#] Care of [D] Business.
I delivered [G] papers and washed [F#m] cars and babies that [E] molded on.
They'd get to 400 to [A] buy this and put it on a big piano from Eddie [D] LaHanna, I remember him.
[G] And that was my guitar.
It [A] got stolen.
So that was before internet.
This was like in the mid [D]-70s.
We were doing a [Am] VTOL.
[G] And so [Gm] then you got [Bm] a little flyer at the end of each month from Groon [Em] Guitars or [A#] Norman's Rugged [A] Guitars,
[A#] listing all the guitars.
You'd [D] call them, get a description [Gm] of the guitar, and buy it on [E] the mail and they'd ship it to you.
[A] Or if you're going [D] there, you'd buy it to Nashville or [C#] L.A.
[D] And I get a [G] call from Rolling [F#] Stone.
Chuck Young, [E] the writer there, and he's doing rag and both.
[A] He said, I heard you lost your guitar [D] and blah, blah, blah, and that you [Gm] would pay [E]
$10,000 to get it back.
And then they were worth [D] $400.
[G] [Gm] [A]
[D]
[Bm] And messages from guys, [D] even [G] telegrams.
[E] I think I've got your [Bm] orange Gretsch.
Here's what it looked like.
Nobody could send pictures down, but they actually took a [A] Polaroid of it.
[E] [A] At that time I'd moved down to Linden, Washington.
[D] So I'm there living in Linden.
[Gm] Lorelei's like a little [D] kid running around.
Cal is about [G] 12.
[G#]
[D] We're out in the backyard and we're [E] playing.
I was [A] building a tree house at the [D] time in [B] the crotch of a tree.
So I've [F] got a sheet of plywood [D] on my head.
And the end of it's in [G] the middle of the crotch.
I'm [D] trying to prop it up with a [A] two-by-four.
[D] That's going to be the foot of [C#] the [D] tree house.
And then we're going to build a tree house.
[Gm] And the phone rings.
[D] And the door's open.
It's [E] summertime.
So [A] I say to my daughter, run in there and get the phone and just say I'm [D] busy.
[G] So she runs in and gets the phone.
She comes [A] back.
She says, okay, I told them you're [D] busy and I hung up.
I said, who is it?
She said, a guy named Chad.
[Gm] I thought it was Chad Allen, our first [A] singer in the Guess Who.
So the phone rings [D] again.
I said, that's Chad.
Tell him I'll call him back.
[B] Phone rings again.
She comes back, yeah, it was Chad again, but he's not in Winnipeg.
He's in Nashville.
[Bm] [A#m] Chad's in [A] Nashville?
I say, okay, somebody hold the sheet of [A#m] plywood.
[D] So I go and the phone rings again.
[Gm] I say [E] hello and he's, [A] Bobby, this is Chad.
[Bm] And it's Chad Atkins.
And I go, what?
[G] [D]
So I'm like Jackie Gleason, like, [G] humming, humming, humming.
[D] I don't know what to [E] say.
This is like my all [A]-time greatest guitar idol.
And [D] he had tried to get that Gretsch on [G] me.
It was very rare.
It had the [A] Armands.
And his brother had [D] one.
His brother gave it to him and he played it a lot.
And I got [Bm] it because of the picture on [Gm] his album.
It was the [Am] Dwayne Eddy Gretsch as [A] well.
[D] And had hump blocks and the Armands.
And it was really a [G] phenomenal Gretsch.
Very lightweight.
[Fm] [E]
So he said, was that [B] the guitar I tried to get from you?
I said, yeah, [D] it was the one that was in [G] that.
[F#m] And he said, and you [E] wouldn't tell him.
And it was stolen.
Yeah, I took [A] it from the hotel room.
He [D] said, what's your address?
I said, I'm going to send you something.
[G] So I give him my address.
[A] A few days later, this [D] arrives.
And this is the Super Chet.
[G] It was a [Gm] prototype then.
[A]
[Am] And a [Bm] week later, he was playing at the Vancouver Symphony.
So I get the guitar.
I take it up [D] there.
[G] He signs the pickguard to me.
[Bm] I hold it up.
He has a picture.
So he gives it to me again in the picture.
So this is [A] like a special guitar.
[E] There's [A] only a few made.
He had a couple.
[D]
It's very heavy.
But humbuckers.
[C#] There's a left [Gm]-handed one made that he gave [D] to somebody named Macca.
[G] Paul [G#] McCartney.
[D] And so he sent me this.
But this has got a built-in [E] flanger, [A] a built-in phaser, [D] all kind of in and [B] out switches.
And [D] it's the kind of guitar that's [G] really rare because it's black.
[F#m] And you can kind of see the grain through it.
[D] It's got a zero fret.
There's a little retainer from Frank [G] Fender that he [D] put on it.
That [E] basically destroys the guitar's value, [A]
except it was Chet [D] Atkins who did that with a nice pick
and [G] stuck it in a Fender retainer, and [A] he signed the guitar.
So, like, this is [D] a really super-duper special guitar.
[Am] [Bm]
[Gm] Thank you, [A] Chet Atkins.
[D]
