What is this going to get us?
Where are we heading in?
[Ab] [Gm] When do we start [Ebm] to [Db] live dear?
[Dm] When do we really [Cm] begin?
[Gm] What is this going to get us?
Hanging [G] around till four
[Ab] [Gm] Saying [Ebm] goodnight at [Db] daybreak
[F] Kissing [Dm] goodbye in the [G] doorway
[B]
[A] We can't go [Db] on the way [Ab] we've gone
I'm at the end of [Db] my road
[Bbm]
I can't [F] live on [Db] love I've so [Bb] much of
[Gm] I [Cm] can't keep living on [Gm] hope
What is this going to get us?
[N] I [G] used to run errands and I was very, very [Abm] commercial.
[B] You had to give me a [G] nickel, you couldn't give me two pennies.
[B] And there was a lady on [Dm] the corner that had a record machine.
[B] [F] And I could hear Louis [Eb] Armstrong and Bessie [B] Smith and Southern Charge or [Em] anything.
[B] I always knew I could sing because I always did sing.
[E] But [G] I just did [E] it for my own [B] pleasure or for Mom.
I never knew I could make [Ab] any money out of [B] it.
Until I just had [Dm] to and Mother got sick [Eb] and [Gm] she couldn't take care of [Em] us anymore.
[E] I wandered down to [B] 133rd Street [E] in a little [Eb] nightclub.
And told the man I was a dancer, I made an audition.
And he told me [Gm] I had to stop [E] and go [Ab] home.
And the [C] other boy says, well, [Ab] can you sing?
And I said, sure, I sing all the [Eb] time.
He wants [Db] a singer.
[Gm] He said, well, go and [F] sing.
So I sang [Ab] and everybody loved me.
I made about $40 in tips.
And I got the [B] job for $18 a week.
With all your traveling from [Db] town to town and nightclub to [B] nightclub,
really have you ever thought of settling down to a well, a [Db] cozy home, cooking, sewing, [C] dusting?
I settled down [Bb] every chance I [Ab] got.
And still getting into a hotel room when we get to town.
I see if we can get a [B] kitchenette so I can wash my husband's shirts and cook.
Well, your husband's right here in the dressing room with us, [Db] Mr.
Lewis McKay.
[Ab] Mr.
McKay, you must be a very talented man to have won the [B] heart of this lovely lady.
Tell us something about how you two work together.
Well, we have something like a private agreement.
I handle all the business.
She handles all the music.
So [Fm] she tells me sometimes, you stay out of my music.
[B] And does she stay out of the business?
She does.
Then you get along fine.
Wonderful together.
Of course, we only have one problem.
We always late on catching the train and the train.
[D]
There's nothing happening.
I mean, with the tunes you did, you just [Bbm] can't get into them.
You [Ab] can't feel them.
Unless you do novelty [B] things.
You write cute [D] novelty things.
[Ebm] But I don't sing novelty.
[A] The things that I sing have [Bb] to have something to do with me and my life and [F] my friends' lives.
And [Bb] it has to have a meaning.
