Hi everybody, welcome back to Mando lessons.
My name is Baron Collins Hill.
In this week's lesson
We are going to take the tune Red-Haired Boy
And I'm gonna play it through a couple times
Starting out just with the simple melody the way I've taught it on my website
And then as I play it subsequent times, I'm gonna add some double stops
ornamentations and things like that.
The idea here is we're gonna take a tune from a simple arrangement and
Add things to it until we have a more complex idea and give you some ideas of what you can do with a tune
Once you've got the sort of what I call the skeleton of the tune under your fingers
If you need to learn this tune
There is a lesson over at mandolessons.com and here on YouTube where I teach the lesson by ear
there's also sheet music tablature and standard notation chords to play along with play along tracks and
Jam along videos over at mandolessons.com
If any of those resources are something you're interested in.
All the lessons I put out are always free
That said there are a couple ways to donate which is always appreciated
You can become a member on patreon and get access to lessons a day early
Free play along track downloads and monthly patron only live streams, which are always a lot of fun
That said donations are always voluntary and up to you and there's no requirement by any stretch of the imagination
So let's jump into this tune again
I'll play it simply at first and then build up to a more complex rendition and talk about what I'm doing as I go
Let's get into it.
Alright, so here we go.
We've got red-haired boy
I'll play it through as written out in the sheet music and as I taught in my red-haired boy lesson
And then I'll add things to it as I go along and talk about what they are as I'm doing them.
So
One two, three [B] four
[Em] [A] [B]
[E] [A]
[B] [A] [Em] [A]
[Gm] [A] [E]
[A] [Em]
[C#m] [D] [C#m]
[B]
[A]
I'm gonna add a lot of double stops this time [E] on the A and E strings
[Em] [C#m]
[D] [A] [E]
Got this little G double stop
[Em] five [A] and two
[E] B part a whole lot of a [A] drone
[A] G double stop again
[D] A drone G double stop
[A] [C#] [A] Now I'm gonna really fill in the melody with a [B] lot of eighth notes
[F#]
[C#m] [D] really get your right hand moving
[E]
[B] All down up down up.
[E] [B]
[E] [B]
[C#m] [B] I'm gonna take a lot of notes out
[A]
[Em] [A] [E]
[A] Leave the notes out but add double stops
[Em] [A]
[D]
[Em] [A] Great way to figure out where the important notes are in the [E] tune.
[Em] [A] [D]
[A] I'm gonna add slides
[B]
[A] [E]
[A] [B] blue notes
[F#] [E]
[F#]
[Am] [D] [Cm]
[F#m] [A]
[C#m] [D] [Am]
All right, so there you go, that's a couple different ideas
I did everything from adding in double stops a lot of those open a and E strings.
I
Added a lot of notes to [B] the melody
[F#m] [E] It's great practice on sort of ways to fill in lines and create a really fluid eighth note heavy melody
I took a lot of notes [A] out the next time through
[G]
It's a great way to figure out what the really the most important notes of the tune are and where you can mess around with
It and not lose sight of the melody [C] added [C#] in some of those [D] slides third to fourth fret on the a string
[A] [C#] fifth to [E] seventh on the a string
[F#m] [D] [G]
Had that little G double stop a whole lot fifth fret on the D string second on the a
And that's most [E] of what I was doing.
So there we have it.
Thanks so much for watching
I hope you enjoyed that again lots more lessons over at mandolessons.com
