[A] My name is Poncho Sanchez of the Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band.
[C]
I play the legendary Remo Congas and also the Poncho Sanchez Signature Series.
[N]
The way I met Remo [G] is he used to come and see me play at a little club in Studio City.
And he'd come and see [D] me play and [G] at that time, this [N] was a good 20 years ago,
he made a little experimental set of bongos, but they were made of plastic.
And the heads were plastic [Ab] and the drums were plastic.
[D] And I thought that's all he made and I thought he would give me his card and said,
would you come out and visit [Db] Remo and company, we'd like to do [Gb] something with you.
And I thought, no man, you make those plastic drums.
[C] Boy, was I wrong.
When I [N] finally got myself together to go to the Remo factory,
my jaw dropped when I walked in there.
First of all, because it [G] was immaculate.
It's so clean.
[N] It's so advanced.
It's so new.
I thought I was going to enter a dirty, dusty place with drums underneath,
a bunch of sawdust and drums and dust and whatnot.
No, this place is organized [D] together and Remo has some great ideas.
As a matter of fact, [G] you got to think [C] back to the 40s and 50s.
Drummers used, all drummers, drums and [E] traps, everybody used calf heads.
[F] And Remo walked in one day to the place and started telling some of the local [G] drummers
to try this [D] plastic snare [Eb] drum head that he had made.
[Ab] And everybody laughed at him because [C] it was made from plastic.
This is the late 40s, 50s.
And after they [G] played it, they found out how crispy and clean that head was.
And now, I don't know [C] anybody that uses [F] calf heads on a drum set.
[C] And Remo did the same thing with me.
[Cm] When I went into that Remo [Bb] factory and he told me,
you're making plastic heads, I ain't going for it.
[Gm] And we started, we need to work on it.
And I used to go there every other week for almost a year
as we were [N] working on the shell of the congas
because they're also, they're compressed wood chip fibers,
the actual shell of the drum, [D] and they're solid.
And the same thing with the heads.
The heads now [N] sound great.
They sound like real cowhide heads.
They sound authentic.
And I was down in Remo at that time, but I don't anymore
because now I'm taking it another step further.
I don't know any conga drummers that [Ab] use regular [Gm] cowhides on the congas.
[N] Everybody's using Remo heads now.
So Remo has changed the drum world twice with drum [C] heads.
And I love you for it, Remo.
