Good day to you one and all, it is I, Justin Hawkins, and this is Justin Hawkins Rides Again.
Now I've just come back from a tour of America, and while I was out there, this thing called Scary Pockets
covered, I believe, in a thing called love.
And everybody, and their dog, decided to direct message me on Instagram to say,
you've got to react to this, and I ignored all of it because I was away, I couldn't do much about it.
But my producer has finally spoken out, and I am going to react to it today.
So yeah, enjoy.
Justin Hawkins [B] Rides Again, [E] again.
[Em]
So, Scary Pockets, they did, I believe, in a thing called [F#] love, the funk cover featuring Brooke Simpson,
released on the 9th of October.
Scary Pockets, a funk band that releases weekly music videos and covers in pursuit of the funk.
Scary Pockets is Ryan Lerman and Jack Conte, with the help and support from a rotating roster
of the best session musicians, singers and producers in Los Angeles, California.
I'm going to watch it and tell you what I [Em] think.
Again.
[E] [A]
[Em] [E] [F#]
What the fuck?
It's almost unrecognisable.
So I suppose that's like a [N] transition that goes from the F,
[F#m] [B] [F#]
[B] [F#] but then it goes to C sharp, really string.
Hmm, interesting.
[A]
[Em] [E]
[F#] [Gm] [A]
[Em] [E]
[A] I always love it when someone goes off, I mean, the whole thing about writing that song is that it was the simplest approach to a lead vocal.
[F#] So when somebody tries to posh that up, it always kind of like, oh yeah, perhaps I should have tried something like that.
It's inspiring in a cool way.
But then I remember that the manifesto [F] of that song is to do something super simple and they've complicated it up already.
[F#] [Gm]
[A] She sings it beautifully, that isn't she?
My heart's on [C]
overdrive and you're behind [E] the steering wheel.
Heart's on overdrive, that's [F#] interesting.
I mean, that changes it from, lyrically it changes it from being about, because the whole thing about being in overdrive, that's like my dad's old MG that he restored, [E] or MGB I think it was.
It had a button on the dashboard that was overdrive and I presume it introduces more fuel to the engine for that pushing you over the cliff when you're doing, in that car, 50 miles an hour and you want to get up to 55.
So on overdrive, I don't know what that means.
[C#m]
[E] [F#] And I've noticed that before.
I always go.
They've added an additional sort of step down.
It's just a really posh version of that [A#] song, I think.
[E] But whenever you see somebody sort of feeling a song that you've written, this is, it gets you because it's like, oh, okay, this matters to somebody else as well in a completely different way.
That's why they're adding all those notes and doing stuff.
[C#m]
[A]
[E] [A]
[E] [A]
Does that sound like a funk to you?
I mean, it's more like, it sounds like there's a certain period of Phil Collins' career, you know, that album that had Another Day in Paradise on it.
And it was, I think there was a song on there that this arrangement is reminding me of a little bit.
It's the one that goes,
Something happened on the way.
I've forgotten it.
[E]
[A] [C#m]
[D] [A]
[C] [E] It's a nice synth work in there.
[D]
[A] [C] [G]
[E] [F#] [E]
[A] [F#] I've started doing that with a microphone as well, you know, not for podcasts, really, but you know,
And that [Am] thing that some people do.
And when a good and experienced singer like [G#] this person here, what's her name again?
Brooke something.
Yeah, Brooke Simpson does it.
It looks natural, but there's a certain type of [G] manufactured girl band that particularly does that.
And then you see them doing it.
And it's like, someone's told you to do that.
That's not what's happening [A] here, though.
Just to clarify, it's when it's done right, it's done right.
[C] [E]
[F#] [C#m]
[E] [A#]
This sort of pre-chorus bit is now sounding a bit yacht rock.
I'm enjoying that actually.
I love, I love a bit of yacht rock.
[C#m] [A] [G#m]
[F#]
[E] Interesting choice of push [A] there.
[D#] [E] [A] [F#]
[E]
[F#]
[E] It's really comfy for her, isn't it?
Singing this kind of, getting up there is no problem at [C#m] all.
[D]
[E] [F#m] [C#m] Oh, cool.
Symphosizer solo.
Right, I'm going to rewind it and watch it.
[D]
[E] [F#m]
[E] [F#]
[E] [F#]
[C#m] [D]
[E] Moog Prophet thing sounds good.
Moog, my bad.
I [F#] mispronounced it.
[E] I like that bit as well.
That's a good gesture for a rhythm of my heart type thing.
[A]
[E] [F#]
[C#m]
[F#] [E] These musicians are really, really good, aren't they?
[A] [F#]
[E] [A]
[E] [F] Love listening to what the bass is up to there.
Because instead of just walking for [E] it.
It's worth listening to each individual element of this because it's such a brilliant arrangement.
[C#m]
[D] [C#m]
[D] [C#m]
[D] [F#]
Well, it's impossible to watch that and not feel flattered somewhat.
It's really cool that they've made the effort.
It needed to be reacted to because it's so fucking good.
This is elite level musicianship.
Poshing up and interpreting what is obviously a really, really simple song.
And it's just nice to hear it.
Wow.
Suddenly I feel loved and nurtured and important.
For the first time in the last hour.
Great stuff.
Justin [B] Hawkins rides again.
Thanks, Scary Pockets.
[E] Again.
[Em]
Yeah, awesome stuff.
I'm going to check out their other covers as well.
This is a great [E] project and really brilliant musicians.
Don't forget to like, [F] subscribe, hit the bell for notifications.
Watch one of these two videos and join the mailing list.
For goodness sake, do yourself a favour.
Alright, nice [Em] one guys.
See you on the ice.
