[N] I'm John Bollinger with Premier Guitar.
Today we're doing a review demo of Taylor's
new 814CE.
Before I tell you more about this very cool guitar, I'll tell you about how
we're recording this video.
We're micing it with a Royer R121 mic, which is going to an
Apogee Quartet and into Pro Tools.
And [E] then to show the proprietary pickup system of the
814, we're running a direct line out straight into the Apogee Quartet and then that's running
into Pro Tools as well, so you can kind of get a feel for the two of them.
And that's it.
This
guitar was just sent here for a review, taken right out of the box, and I gotta tell you, man,
[D] it plays and sounds great.
Taylor [E] is
it's a quality product.
They start with great woods.
This is a solid Sitka spruce top.
It's beautiful.
The [Gb] back and sides [Gm] are Indian rosewood.
The
binding is maple.
This backstrip is maple.
Really [E] beautiful.
Rosewood border right there.
Rosewood pick guard, which I like.
Ebony bridge, ebony fingerboard.
Really a quality, beautiful
guitar.
Now, Taylor's always been about that, using good woods, but they've made some real
improvements.
The greatest improvement, I think, is that they've managed to reduce the finish by
40%.
That's a huge difference.
So, like I said, this guitar just came out [G] of the box, but it's
very open sounding.
And I imagine with this thinner finish, it's going to open up even more
over the years.
A thicker finish, it's going to take longer to open.
Some guitars never really
do, but this is ringing [E] nice and true right out of the box, which is great.
In addition to that,
Taylor has revamped their bracing.
They've changed the bracing to fit the shape of the guitar.
And
if you can see, the point is to maximize the sound quality of this particular shape with
the bracing.
They say it's going to make it more warm, punchy, defined, [A] and
[E] I think it does.
It
really is a great sounding guitar.
[N]
They also are using animal protein glue for the bracing, and I
think for the bridge as well.
Now, that's an interesting choice, because back in the day,
golden age guitars like Martin's from the 40s and Gibson's, they would use animal [A] based glue,
because that's all that's available.
But apparently there is some sort of property to
this animal base that sounds better.
So good for Taylor for utilizing that.
They also use a Tusk
nut, which I [E] like.
[A] It [E] sounds great.
The intonation is very true.
And the other changes they've made
is [Ab] they've revamped their pickup system a bit, modified it.
[N] In 2003, with Robert Neve, they
designed the expression system.
And a fine system, but they've made some changes.
It's now
quite a bit louder, which I like.
I think it's something like 25% louder.
And on top of that,
the pickup runs off a 9-volt battery, as it did in the past, but it runs for something like 40
to 50 hours, which is killer.
But when the battery dies, it's an easy switch out.
Right back here,
pop that out, pop the new one in,
[Bb] [E] and you're back strumming.
[N] Good to go.
For experimenting,
let's go ahead and play a little bit with just the proprietary system and see how that sounds.
Right now I've got it completely flat.
[Em] The controls are right here.
My one little beef is that I can
never remember what the volume is or what the treble or bass.
I believe this is volume, that's
treble, that's bass.
But I've got them all flat anyway.
Anyway, I'd like some kind of marker, it's
not there, but no big deal.
Here's just the pickup.
[Ab] I'll do like a Merle Travis thing so you can kind
of hear the bass and hear the treble [A] working together.
[E]
[A]
[D] [Am] [G]
[D] [G]
[C] [Gm] [Em]
[C] [G] [B] [C] [G]
Now
[Em] let's see what it sounds like with
the mic and the pickup together.
[D] [E] [A] [E]
[Em] [E]
[Em] That pickup really is very warm.
That's the toughest thing
about an acoustic guitar.
Until recently, I mean in the last, I don't know, 15 years or so, acoustic
guitars I think have all sounded kind of crap when plugged in, but this sounds really good.
And
there's some other companies as well that are making really [Ab] good pickups right [E] now, but there
[A]
[E] This is a very convincing pickup.
Well, thanks so much for joining us today as we test drove Taylor's
new 814CE.
