So now here's a look, ladies and gentlemen, at the legacy of Gosling Music's not only my favorite poet, but favorite ragamuffin.
[D]
At the end of a show sometimes, without any warning, Rich Mullins would launch into the doxology.
As soon as the [Dm] crowd started singing along, he'd step out of the way, [G] leave the mic, leave the [G] stage, disappear.
So go out and live real good, and I promise if you do, you'll get beat up real bad.
[D] But [G]
a little while after you're dead, you'll be rotted away anyway.
It's not going to matter if you have [F] a few scars.
[Am] It will matter if you didn't live.
Richard Wayne Mullins started life in rural Indiana in 1955, born the oldest son in a hardworking Quaker farm family.
He embraced the promise of the [Em] gospel at a young age, but spent the remainder of his 41 [Am] years wrestling with [Dm] the implications of it.
[A] Rich formed his first band, Zion, while in Bible College in Cincinnati.
Eventually, one of his song demos, Sing [D] Your Praise to the Lord, landed in the [A] hands of Amy Grant.
He was captivating.
Anybody that ever toured with him, you know, another band, other musicians,
unlike any other artists, people sat on the side of the stage and watched.
[G] The immediate success of Amy's single launched Rich's career, [D] a career that would span 16 years [A] and 11 albums,
including a gold record, eight number one songs, the number three Christian album of all time as rated by CCM magazine,
and a body of work performed by artists [Dm] like Jars of Clay, Michael W.
Smith, and Third Day.
Rich's life [Am] is a is definitely [D] a legacy of genuineness and of [Am] sacrifice [G#] and [E] of love for God and his people.
17 years after Rich Mullins [D] tragic death in a car accident, his [E] life and music continue to challenge and stir [D] new generations.
His story is now being told afresh in the film [G] Ragamuffin.
[A] Ragamuffin knows he's only [D] a beggar at the door of God's mercy.
His legacy is this.
If you tell the truth and you tell it well, there will always be ears to listen to that.
And it will [G] always, always ring true in people's hearts.
And it doesn't matter how old that song is.
[D] They're going to be listening to Rich for a very long time and we'll be singing his songs 100 years from now.
