[C] [Gm] I make my music, [D] it's a selfish act to make it, write songs [A] for myself to entertain myself
and to, you know, [D] to make, to turn me on, turn my wife on, [E] turn the few [A] people around
[D] me at the time on really, it's just a private thing.
[E] Their [Em] music to me is, [A] it's got to be the soundtrack to life, [D] you know what I mean?
[G] Marvin Gaye's got to be there with sexual [Em] healing and Kurt [A] Cobain's got to be there
with all [D] apologies, [A]
you [E] know, all these songs sitting [A] on the dock of the bay, it doesn't
matter what [D] emotion it's [F#m] pushing on, it's got to be [A] right and it's got to, you know,
[D] the good thing about music [E] is you're feeling melancholic, you can play melancholy on [A] a
[D] melancholic record and it can [F#m] have a healing [A] effect on you and that's [D] what music's about,
[E] it's about celebrating, it's about healing, it's a very powerful thing.
[A] Most people don't, most people abuse it, [B] it's [Am] just good fun really, it's to escape boredom,
that's, you know, [A]
that's the first thing for me, [G] is to escape boredom, so, [F#m] I don't know,
I [E] really don't know, it's just old church music, it's gospel music, it's [A] simple music,
that's my music, I don't claim to be better than anyone else, I'm a punk rock guy who
uses orchestras, I can [E] only play a few chords, I don't [A] know how to play poodle rock guitar
lines, [E]
there's an innocence to my music and, [Am] you [A] know, that's what I like about it, yet
there's a grand vision [E] and I've won a lot out of it, but it's a [A] [D] very personal thing
that you do [C] for yourself and then you [E] realize you're a corporate record company and you're
going to go [G] out and have to promote it and [Em] then you turn into a [F] bit of a twisted moaning [A] musician,
not realizing that you've been [G] given the greatest gift, [A] but it's all really good fun
and I want you kids out there to go and create, even if mama says no.
[E]
This is [D] music, the [E] verb.
[G] [A] If [E] you've got all afternoon, I'll describe, [Em] it's like being a dad in the next [A] 20 years,
next 30 years, it's beyond, you know, people have asked me since it happens, you know,
put into words and if you [E] end up sad, see, looking [G] like Tony Blair outside 10 Downing Street,
[E] fumbling his way through his emotions, [A] it's the most beautiful experience in that life,
most real experience and [E] it's beyond me [G] [D] on television pumping my [A] record,
it's incredible.
[F] What do you want me to say?
It's beyond [D] belief.
[F] There's an innocence in a child
that, you know, [G#] people [E] try and rediscover through any amount of drugs, [G] music, whatever it takes to
rediscover [A] that innocence and yeah, it's a beautiful [G] opportunity to rediscover things [A] that,
you know, only a kid sees and there's beauty in that [G] and I'm buzzing, looking forward to [D] it,
but, [A] you know, [D]
people try and put you in a certain [G] place because you've [D] had a child,
because you're married or because [A] you do this, that and the other, you know, and [G] it's [E]
often
[D] people who don't understand, [A] it's like the people who ask you, does your baby [G] sleep through the
night?
They're [D] either people who've had children [A] and want to have empathy or laugh at you because
[G] they never got any sleep or it's people who haven't had children [A]
and they want [G] to be told
that the baby [D] sleeps for 12 hours, it's cool, go ahead [A] and do it.
So understand that little riddle
[G] and that's all about people coming with [D] agendas, [A] it's all psychology, it's all it is, it's all [G] cheese,
it's all kippers.
[C] [G]
[Em] This is Richard Ashcroft, 1-2-Rock, this is [G] spiritualised, let it flow.
[C] [G] [F#m]
[E] I think the music industry [F#] often [B]
just remains the same, really, same story is told,
percentage of people within [E] the industry are in it purely for money
[Bm]
and [B] the songs they sing and write, you know, are obvious, [Bm] that's the main motivation, there's always
people that are making beautiful, [A] incredible music for the right [Bm] reasons, nothing much changes really,
there'll always be crap, so [A] you can appreciate the diamonds, [Bm] there'll always be that balance,
there has to be.
I don't concern [A] myself really with the music business, I'm not [B] bothered about it in the slightest,
you know, [F#m] these days even [E] if you get dropped by a record company, there's [A] still ways of making [D] music,
far, far [E] more possibilities now, [B] you can make an album in a lounge now, it seemed far more difficult
[A] 10 years ago to be able to do that, you can [C#] release your own music far [B] easier now, you can distribute [Em] it [F#m] easier,
so, [B] you know, the good [A] healthy thing, there's far more possibilities for [Em] people who want to make music now,
and [F#m] the difficult thing with [E] being a big record company is the amount of [Bm] investment
they put into a band, they want it back, so, [D] you got to [A] sell the record, baby.
That [D#] scene was, the concept for the video was Jonathan Glazier as the director,
but [A] that particular scene was actually going to be [C] almost halfway through the video,
and I [Em] filmed it in order, and I got the video back [Am] and put it on, and the pissing was at the [E] end of
the video, and I ran Jonathan up, kind of, he's going [N] on here, man, why am I peeing at the end of the video,
and we had this discussion about it, and because my mind was expecting a different video, I wasn't
seeing the beauty in that scene, but, you know, after I'd watched it a few times, I thought, yeah, this is perfect,
it's absolutely perfect, the cliched, um, shower curtain, nothing comes out of it, you know, this video
stops, this video [F] has silence, you know what I mean, this video has [G] zero, [F#] kind of, lip sync,
so, to me, it's a success, it's just having fun, creating, making a little piece of British film, making
