denied my visa, thinking I was coming to protest apartheid.

This song has _ certainly changed my life and _ it's a song that, you know, we talked about it earlier.
I wrote this song _ during the first tour I did, first big world tour.
And my girlfriend, who's now my wife, Cynthia, was in [G] South Africa making a film.
_ [Ab] She was an actress before we started having kids.
And _ I was touring and _ through various circumstances we didn't see each other for three months.
It wasn't supposed to happen that way.
I was supposed to go visit her in South Africa, [A] but the day [Ab] of my trip the South African government
denied my visa, thinking I was coming to protest apartheid.
Which I would have under normal circumstances, but I was really just going to visit my girlfriend.
_ So we didn't see each other for three months and I was very sad and very depressed and
I just sat down and this song [Bb] fell out in 20 minutes and I sent it to her, a little
recording of it, and to me that was it.
It was done.
I didn't think [Eb] of recording it or doing it.
In fact, I tried to give it away.
I tried to give it right around that time.
I don't know if I've ever told you this story, but right around that time I got a call from
Barbra Streisand saying, you know, I heard your first record, I really love your songwriting,
could you write a song for me?
So I had written this song, Right Here Waiting, and I thought, oh, this [B] would be a good song
for Barbra Streisand because I'm not going to record it.
So I sent it to her and she called me [A] and said, [Ab] I love the music to this song, I love
this melody, but I need you to rewrite the words because I'm not going to be right here
waiting for anybody.
_ It's a true story.
It's an absolutely true story.
So instead of changing the words, I just kept it and then I had some friends who heard the
demo which just sort of basically convinced me to record it.
But this song _ has, _ by no, you know, by no _ _ _ _ _ intention of my own, I wrote this song for
such selfish purposes, but this song's sort of been adopted by [Bm] so many people and a tremendous
amount of people in the military, both _ _ _ women and men who are [Bb] overseas _ and their [Ab] loved ones at home.
_ And this song has taken on a life completely separate from [F] Cynthia and myself, so we'll
do it, ready?
