Jam Along & Learn...
G'day and welcome to this drum lesson for Ride by 21 Pilots.
I've finally gotten around to breaking it down.
so I
to need for this song goes like this.
[E]
It's a bit [N] strange that it doesn't have that second snare drum in there.
So that might be a little bit weird
follows the riff.

G'day and welcome to this drum lesson for Ride by 21 Pilots.
You guys have been requesting
it non-stop so I've finally gotten around to breaking it down.
Now the main groove is
a bit unusual, it's not something you'd hear in every song, but it's not too hard so I
reckon we'll be able to grab it and get this song up and running in no time.
Let's hop
on the kit and check it out.
The main groove that we're going to need for this song goes like this. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [E] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
It's a bit [N] strange that it doesn't have that second snare drum in there.
A little bit later
in the track it does pop up for a little while.
So that might be a little bit weird
at first but it's just kick drums on beat 4 and that's kind of like our backbeat, it
really follows the riff.
Again there's one little fill that I reckon we can learn and
it goes like this. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
In the super broken down bits we're just playing the snare drum on beat 2 and 4. _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ That
is super easy.
When the second verse kind of kicks in, it comes in on beat 4 and so
that will sound like this. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ So hopefully you can hear that and grab that part.
In the next verse there is an extra
snare drum in the bar, I can definitely hear it, it sounds like this. _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
Ok so all we've done is add the snare drum over the top of our existing bass drum.
In
the next bit the kick drums drive along a little bit and we get this kind of driving
reggae feel and that sounds like this. _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
So to bring out those accents from the end of 2 onwards, I'd definitely recommend putting
both hands up on the hi-hats, I'm pretty sure that's what Josh does in the film clip.
_ _ _ _ Then we have a little fill on the tail of the very last bar of that section. _ _ _ _ _
Then eventually we get to the really broken down bit where we're just playing quarter
[Ab] notes on the hi-hats and it's a really spaced out, nice and gentle groove.
It sounds like this. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ Then we're into our really [B] driving bit where we've got 8th notes on the kick drums, 16th
still on the hi-hats and there are a couple of extra doubles, so 30 seconds and buzzes
in there as well.
I can't 100% make out what the snare drums are doing but it feels like
they're [Gm] slowly building up.
So they start out playing quarter notes, then there's a
couple of extra ones and then in the third bar they're playing all 8th notes right up
to when we stop.
So it sounds like this. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ So I find those buzzes and doubles, they're quite tricky to [Gb] get in there, so if you're
having problems just leave them out, it won't make that much of a difference, but as always
if you're up for the challenge, [N] try and squeeze them in.
Now right at the end of that there's a cool feel and it goes like this.
[G] 1, 2, _ 1, _ _ _ 2.
_ _ _ That is a really powerful feel and lots of fun to play.
Then we go back into our choruses
for 2, so that's our 16th note [Ab] pattern with no snare drum on beat 4 as far as I can [Eb] make
out and then it breaks all the way back down and we're playing just a quarter note pattern
that we played in the bridge before and it's pretty [Em] much identical to what we already did.
So there you go, that's everything that you'll need to play Ride by Twenty One Pilots.
I
hope you've [G] had fun, happy practicing and I'll catch you in the next lesson. _ _ _ _ _ _
