Start Jamming...
Jerry of [D] Massachusetts would like us to come to [Eb] the Boston area and again this is something that I know your management is [G] currently working on.
Scott Bailey from Canada.
Are there any songs that you have [A] never played live that you [G] would have liked to have done on stage?
What songs have you most enjoyed doing live throughout your career?
The ones that I do, I really like playing long live rock and roll.
I like Beethoven's 9th.
That's a challenge because it's in 6-8.
It's not the expected 4-4 thump-thump thing.
I really like playing Arial.
[Bm] That's quite a challenge because [G] it's not that easy to play, especially after you've heard 16 different edits.
[Bm] I basically play what I want to play, but I'm always up for requests, especially if [C] they're for the actual songs that I'm playing at the [D] time.
Dave Harms from Ohio.
How do you get that [G] blackmore sound out of a Strat and a Marshall combo?
I have a stock 62 Lelisha Strat and a stock Red Marshall stack, [Eb] but I'm unable to get a thick enough sound out of the pair to perform with.
The Marshall is 50 watts [G] instead of 200-300.
Does this make a difference in the tone or just the volume?
No, just the volume.
It makes no difference in the tone.
It depends if you drink whiskey.
Whiskey does change the sound.
I'm not drinking so much whiskey these days, so that's why I'm playing the Engl amplifiers, which to me get a better [G] sound.
However, the Marshalls did get [Bm] a good sound.
Tinfoil says that if we're looking for an opening band in the Midwest, we can contact them, and I think this [C] is definitely something we want to pass [Bm] along to the management.
[Eb] Hello, Tinfoil.
Bobby Gervais of Texas.
[G] Huge fan of yours, Richie.
Want you to say hello?
[Eb] Hello.
Okay.
So we have a question here, Bobby.
There has been much activity in the record industry to remaster recordings on CD from the original master tapes with new technology to improve the sound.
Are there any plans or would you consider the possibility of remastering some of the early Rainbow albums in this manner?
[Gb] Yes and no.
That's really just a [G] con job by the record label to get more money out of you people, [E]
which I'm opposed to.
If [G] I was you, I'd just stick to what you have.
[E] By the way, Bobby's [G] nickname is Baby Blackmore.
Very good.
[Eb]
Joe from New York.
The Blackmore single coil Strat guitar sound is so classic and recognizable.
[G] But were you ever tempted to use a Les Paul or Strat style guitar with humbucker?
Yes, I was.
Back in 1961 or 62, [D] I [C] always wanted a black Les Paul [E] and nobody [G] I knew had one.
Very expensive guitars.
So I went into [Gb] London and I was playing with a band called [D] The Savages at the time.
And I saw this [Eb] guitarist was playing a black Les Paul.
[G] [Bm] He was a brilliant guitar player and his name was Albert Lee.
[G] And I thought that's the guitar for me.
But unfortunately, Jimmy Page took it up with Led [Ab] Zeppelin a little bit later [Dm] and that put me off [Gb] of, not because Jimmy played it, because it then became the fashionable guitar to play, [G] the Les Paul.
And I'm really not one to be in cahoots with fashion, if I can help it.
But they're very good guitars.
Very heavy and if you have a bad back like I do, then they're not the guitar of choice.
Louis Pardoff [Bm] from Venezuela.
Who was your favorite [Eb] keyboard player in pre-Stranger-In-Us-All [G] rainbow lineups and why?
I would say David Rosenthal.
Very easy to get along with and he was pitch perfect.
The man was absolutely amazing.
[Bm] I don't know if you remember Kate Bush.
But I played him a Kate Bush [Db] song [Ab] on my cassette and he could [Dm] work out the chords instantly and they're [G] not simple.
And Kate Bush being one of my favorites back in those days.
This is no mean task, especially by ear, without consulting an instrument at the time.
[Bb] Very [Ab] talented man [E] and he's doing very well [D] and we might get together with Dave again.
Wesley Walters from Baltimore, Maryland.
My favorite Rainbow song is Rainbow Eyes.
I love the [Bb] majestic sound of [B] rising and long-lived [Eb] rock and roll.
Are there any chances we might hear [E] some more rare acoustic tracks from you?
[Eb] Do you plan to use more strings on future recordings?
[B] [Gb] No, I'm going to [G] stick to the six strings.
But there will [Ebm] be a lot more acoustic stuff coming out.
We're [Ab] working on it right now.
And [Gbm] I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when you hear it, which will be out [G] probably in February, January, around there.
[Bm] Fabiano Carlos from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
[Eb] He wants to know if you're going back and what did you think about the shows in Buenos Aires?
[Gb] We had a great time there.
I was very pleasantly surprised with being down there.
[B] And we'll [Bm] come back any time.
The promoters were fantastic and everything went very well.
[Eb] I had a great time.
Good soccer players too.
Doug McBeek from Edinburgh, Scotland.
Would like to know [D] if there's going to be an extended UK tour.
And again, Doug, I think the best thing for you to do is get in touch with Neil Warnock at the agency.
He said he would love to see you somewhere like [A] Glasgow, New Foreign.
And wants to know if you have any plans with another Rainbow album with Doogie on the [G] vocal.
Yes, it looks like Doogie will be on the next LP.
Although I haven't put it together yet.
And I'd love to do the UK.
Some of my favorite places are like [C] Glasgow, [Eb] Edinburgh, [G] York.
York is like one of the oldest towns in England.
And the most haunted, so that's always a great place to play.
But we always seem to get [Gb] put into London, which is good.
But I don't understand why it's always [G] London.
I prefer to play in the middle of England.
Probably York and then York again.
[D]
York's a good place.
And we have had a great many requests for that, by the way.
