These cuddly creatures are Chinchilla.
They're South [Fm] American in origin but
they're quite at home living in this cooler British climate.
Their owners
pretty well travel too.
He's just back from touring Australia with his
brothers.
He is of course Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees.
[Gm] [Ab]
Getting over your jet lag?
Yeah I'm just doing the old [G] Chinchilla round.
The good
thing about these things is they're always here when you get back.
They're restless, they love their freedom.
This is Eric.
Eric is about five or six years [C] old.
[F] The [D] Chinchillas come from a volcanic region of the Andes so it's
important that they have a bowl of volcanic dust in their cage.
[Gm] Rolling
around in this [C] dust is the only [G] way that they can groom and clean [Gm] their dense
fur.
[G] So how come you're such a Chinchilla freak?
We started out with two, we didn't
realize they were male and female and then suddenly there was four and six and
they just kept sort of multiplying.
The thing about these is that once the
female has had children that they go on heat almost immediately and you have to
separate them because they'll just be breeding all over the place forever and
ever.
You've got hundreds of them.
Chinchillas are pregnant for five months.
That's much longer than with most small animals and their babies are born
already fully furred and with their eyes open.
So this is my private little stonehenge.
Was this here when you got the place?
No, no we built it ourselves and sometimes I'll bring down the old Chinchilla and meditate.
It's very relaxing, it's [Ab] got a magical feel about it.
We took Eric into Robin's
favorite hideaway, the chapel that he's converted to use as a music room.
Just exquisite, aren't they lovely?
Yeah, the fur's beautiful.
One interesting note Rob is that they have the
densest fur of any animal.
About an inch deep before you get down to the actual
skin.
That's why it's not really appropriate for young children because
they look like a big cuddly toy.
They are quite fragile underneath.
And do they chew all the woodwork everywhere?
They love to chew on things
because their teeth grow so at an enormous rate that they have to
keep gnawing to keep them down.
And I was expecting, you know, I was expecting the
little claws to dig in but grabbing the foot here, they don't seem to have any.
They're [G] like little rubber pads underneath.
That's because they're running around so
much around the cave, keeps them worn down.
Do you ever let them go in the place?
Yeah, they like to run around.
Can I give a run now?
Yes, see what it does.
He looks so comfortable there he probably won't go anywhere but we'll try him on
the floor and see what he thinks.
Yeah.
Putting Eric down for a run was easy but then we had to catch him.
[Gm] Alright.
[Cm] Robin didn't want him running around too long because with all that fur a chinchilla can get [Gm]
overheated.
Oh [Gm] no.
[G] Perfect place for a song I think about chinchillas.
Right, here's your note.
Chin, chin, chin, chinchillas.
They don't chase motorbikes, they don't chase cars, they don't chase cats, don't drink in bars,
rule to the end, wonderful friend, they're a perfect pet, chinchillas.
[G]
[N] Wonderful friend, they're the perfect pet.
I should contact the Bee Gees and get them to record that with me.
