Roland Dyens plays Piazzolla's Oblivion (1947 Bouchet) chords
Start Jamming...
Okay, okay.
You know, I always compare a concert to a trip.
It's a bit like that, the same, finally.
There's a beginning, a middle part, and landing.
You know, landing.
Now it's maybe landing time, but before the plane touch the tarmac,
you know, it takes time.
It might, could take time, okay?
So it's not like, chuck!
I would like to, before to land completely,
I would like to take you to South America, okay?
Right?
But I know what I'm doing now is more than dangerous,
but I love danger.
I love danger.
I will play, you know, I don't know if my new friend David told you that or not,
but these days, since couple of months, if not three months,
I emerged in Piazzolla's music.
And I know that I would meet this buddy,
soon or later, and it's now.
For some reason, I'm writing new arrangements,
ten new arrangements on his beautiful music,
and it's something.
It's a great musician, and it's not, it's tricky to do,
I mean, this arrangement, because there is nothing really duly written
as a score, official score, so you have to have an elephant ear to take,
to pick, you know, to, and most of all, to be faithful,
which is the most important, faithful to the style of Piazzolla.
Of course, it's not a question of notes.
And it's very difficult because Piazzolla is like a jazz player.
He's a jazz player to me.
I mean that he's very, he's improvising a lot,
so you have to take the melody and to make it like improvised like,
but it's very, I'm not bandoneon player,
so the notes on the bandoneon go super fast,
and sometimes it's quite tricky.
And what I'm going to play for you tonight
is one of them that I already played.
It's Oblivion, which is to me maybe the most beautiful,
maybe the most beautiful.
Oblivion means forget, you know, oubli, forget.
And the second one is a surprise, is a present, but it's a danger
because it's the first time that I'm going to play ever tonight for you.
It is a famous libertango.
It's not ready.
I know that I'll be hesitating.
I know that I even be, I will screw up, okay?
Okay, but we are like in family, okay?
If you be an indulgence, okay, right?
I've decided to play for the first time for you tonight
and not for my next concert.
Shh!
[Dm] So Oblivion first [Gm] and libertango.
