[G#]
I teach [C#m] guitar these days.
Everybody [G#] wants to learn about Robert Johnson.
In fact, I
have a teaching DVD, Volume 1 and Volume 2.
We have Volume 1 with us here on the road.
It's already sold out.
So, we [E] can't keep it in stock.
It's popular.
[F#] You can get it on
our website.
[C] You can get it in other places as well.
[B] We have other DVDs here.
[E] This is
what I tell my students about how to figure [C#] out a kind of
We can't tell what tuning
is.
[B] I say, well, here's a good way to start.
[Cm] If the song has a slide, the chances [F] are good
that it's in an [B] open tuning.
So, you start by tuning your guitar to almost [B] any open tuning
you can invent that [N] sounds like it's in the same [B] key.
Most people can do [E] that.
It doesn't
have to be correct yet.
Then you listen for the high slide notes.
A lot of times, they're
on the 12th fret.
This is what Robert Johnson did.
[F#] [E] So, I thought, wow, that's higher than
12th fret.
He's playing it way up here.
So, [B] I tuned it high.
So, I tuned up my strings
[F#] [E]
until
Fell right at the [G#] 12th fret.
And it was in tune with what he was playing on
the record.
[E] Then you listen for the bass notes.
And they were really deep.
So, I had to tune
the bass strings down [G#] a little bit.
That's unusual to have really [E] deep bass notes and
[D#] then a missing note or two that you'd expect and then very high shrill notes.
[B] It's a great
tuning.
Then you listen to your second chord.
[A] If it works in your tuning, [A] you're getting
really warm.
[E] [A] [E] The last thing you do is you listen to see if there's some [C] unusual note.
I call it a wild note.
[A] There was [C] a wild note in this song.
It [F#] was in the second chord.
[D#] You'd never expect that note in this [A] chord.
But all you have to do is take your finger
off the string and there's that [D#] beautiful note.
So, the chances are [E] very good that this
is the tuning for Ramone on my [B] mind.

but the pieces don't matter.

[F#] a princess girl.
[B] Anything, but the pieces don't matter.
