[D] This is, these [Am] songs are all about the South.
[A] John and I co-wrote the album together except for one song,
which we wrote with Rodney Crowell.
I know, [F#] writing with my husband and my ex-husband,
that [G#] in itself is
[E] I'm very proud of that.
Dare we say modern family?
Yes.
It took some evolution [A#] to be [B] able to do that.
But we wrote these songs after a lot of trips through the Delta,
particularly through the [Bm] South, but mostly through the Delta.
And, you know, the [Gm] Delta is rife with [F] characters
[Bm] and timeless places and music [E] and [Bm]
revolution,
some kind of vortex there.
This song is about an area of Arkansas called the Sunken Lands.
It's where my father grew up.
The Cash family was given a cottage,
40 acres and a mule, [B] during the New Deal,
and it [C#] saved their lives.
[F#]
The hero of this song is my grandmother, [B] Carrie Cash,
who raised seven children and picked cotton
[Bm]
and had a hard life,
harder than we can imagine.
She never complained.
They said when they moved into their brand-new cottage,
there were five cans of paint sitting in the front room,
[F] nicest [Bm] place they'd ever seen.
[F#m] [Bm]
[F#m] Five [D] cans of paint [A] in the empty fields
And the [Em] dust reveals
[Bm]
The [A]
children [D] cry
The [A] work never ends
There's not a [Em]
single friend
[Bm]
[G] Who will hold [A] her hand
In the [E] sunken [D] [G] lands
[Bm] [A]
[D] [A]
[Em]
[B]
[Bm]
The mud [C#]
[D] and tears
Melt [A] the cotton balls
It's a [Em] heavy toll
Oh, [Bm] oh
His [A] words [D] are cruel
And they sting [A] like fire
Like [Em] the devil's choir [Bm] Oh, oh
Who [A] [G]
will [Em] hold [A] her hand
In the sunken [Em] [D] lands
[G] The [Bm] [A]
[D] [A]
[Em]
[Bm]
[C#]
[D] [A]
[Em]
[F] [A] [E] [Bm]
[A]
river [D] rises
And she [A] sails away
She could [Em] never stay [Bm] Oh, oh
The [A] work [D] is done
In [A] those sunken lands
There's [B] five empty [Bm] cans
[A] [Bm] [A]
[D] [A]
[Em]
[Bm]
