So, I'm a huge fan of the Ithaca Girls.
Particularly, growing up and first writing songs, I was just so enamored with Emily's diary and her lyrics.
Favorite songwriter at the time, it was just all I could think about.
And, uh, when we became friends, she kept saying,
[N] Girlfriend, we should get together and write sometime.
I was like, yeah, we should definitely do that.
That's definitely gonna happen, I'm sure.
And, you know, a couple years went by, it didn't happen.
And she shocked me, she called me one time and she went,
Friend, I have a couple days off, I was thinking I'd come fly out and stay at your house.
And we'd write a song.
I was just like, shit.
[A] You know, cause I mean, I don't know if I could even play guitar in front of her for a long time, let alone write a song with her.
So she did, she comes out and stays at my house.
And I'm [D] nervous, because I know this whole time, eventually she's gonna make me write something.
And we did a lot of, you know, [E] barbecuing, a little bit of drinking, and [A] having the dogs and stuff.
But we didn't know the right ending for a while.
And then, finally, we're all alone and she's like, okay, let's head up to your studio and write a song.
So I'm like, oh, okay.
We get up there and I grab my guitar, she grabs her guitar, she's like, so you got any riffs?
Do you have anything in mind?
And I was like, yeah, I got stuff.
And she's like, okay, well play something for me.
And I picked up the guitar and I just started going like this.
And then I never changed chords.
I froze.
Didn't do anything.
So finally she picks up her guitar and looking at me, she turns around and goes,
While I'm playing the same chord.
She's like, okay, we're gonna change.
[E] And I was like, okay.
[N] And that's how I wrote the music to the song.
In my fear, I stayed on one chord and ended up writing a song with basically one chord because that's what I knew.
And, you know, and then we sit down to write lyrics and she hands me a pad of paper and she goes,
Okay, now you go over to that side of the room and write something and I'll go over here and write something.
And I have my little paper over my head and I just look at it.
And so I finish my verse.
For like 15 minutes I'm done.
I haven't said anything yet.
And finally I was like, Emily, I finished my verse.
And she said, okay, let's hear it.
I was like, throwing coins at a wishing well, if I couldn't count, if I couldn't tell, it wouldn't worry me that my wishes don't come true.
Open eyes to an open mile, from a broken heart to a crooked smile.
You can find your way, but your ways will find you too.
And she goes, that's great.
I'm finished too.
Seven nights and seven days have made my world to see your face.
Sweet harbinger of sin, the serpent's been let loose.
Harbinger of sin.
It's like the harvest on the vine.
Somehow the sun shows up in time and gives a poet's seat for perfect thought.
Except I think she said [A] fodder.
[D] And I just, my verse about a wishing well just seemed so [A] silly.
But the reason why I'm telling [C#] you about this experience is because it was a really big one for me.
We wrote this song together.
And then we heard about what happened to Teresa Butts and her partner.
[N] Emily called me and asked if we could record the song in all persons.
We go towards the self-defense project at war.
We're doing that now.
[A] I'm just going to sing Emily's part because it's one chord.
It's not that great.

The waves [E] will find you too.
[Bm] Someone's [E] missin' you.
Someone's [A] hangin' on the lonely life of [D] dead.
[Am] An [Bm] old time war [E] of words, like a song [A] to me.
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Let it go, let it go, [Em] let it go.
[A] Seven nights and seven days, I made my world to see your [D] face.
We are adjourned.
The circuit's been [A] gated.
I'll sing of our love, because I'm pulling up my socks,
and you're making [D] tea, trying to find your [E] shoes.
[Bm] Someone's missing [E] you.
Someone's [A] having a moment [D] like the dead.
And [Bm] that old time war of [E]
words, just the sermon [A] in your head.
Let it go, let it go, let it go, let it go.
[E] [Em]
[A] With the harvest on the vine, somehow the sun shows up in [D] time
and gives the poem a seat for perfect thought.
[A] This is Emily's writer.
You will be a simpler man and work it out with your bare hands.
Here's mine.
[D] We do the best we can with [Em] what we get.
[B] Someone's missing [E] you.
[A] Someone's having a moment [D] like the dead.
And [Bm] that old time war [E] of words, just the sermon [A] in your head.
Let it go, let it go, let it go.
Let it go, let it go, let it [A] go.
[E] Let it go, let it go, let it go.
