Hi Sylvie, so this is the tune rubber dolly
It's an old-timey fiddle tune.
That's really popular at a lot of the dances
and it
it starts with a couple of pickup notes, so
Pickup notes are notes before the main beat of a dance step
So in this case it goes But
So there's three little pickup notes they go three two one
But right so the dancers would step on the first bar
But the rest of the notes kind of lead you to them.
So the pickup notes in this case start on
the a string second finger on the a string and
They'll sound something like this
One and two
[N] Something like that.
So all the notes on the a string lead [G#] you to your first main note
Which is second finger on the D string.
Okay, so it's like
[F#m] [C]
So I'll just play [B] the whole tune for you right now
one and two
[F#m] [B] [E]
[C#] [B] [F#m]
[E]
[B]
[D] [F#m]
[B] [F#m]
[D] [F#m]
[Bm] [A]
[N] Something like that
so
You'll notice that I kind of paused in between each of the phrases in the a part so
My bow actually stopped on the string and I just kind of listened to the whole silence fill up with a beat of space there
Which is very important in dance tunes to make sure that the beat is is always there and it's always steady so
The what I was doing with my bow [G#] would be something like
[F#m] [N] And see how my bow just glides to a stop the hinge of my elbow opening and closing just glides
Or it opens [G#] and closes again, right so in between every phrase it was doing kind of that
[F#m]
[C#] I'm not pressing [N] down or anything.
It's just my elbow gliding to a stop.
So
Then in the B part
The shuffling bowing when something
[G] As [C#] you [N] speed that up
Just make sure that the that the short notes are given their full duration
So that you don't clip them short
[Gm] [C] Right don't clip off the ends let them sit as big fat short notes
So that they sound [D] kind of like
[F#m] [N] You know, I'm giving them each their full length of duration.
So when you speed it up
I'll play the whole tune for you sped up a little bit and
Basically, what happens is your bow is just condensed a little bit you use less bow
To go faster, you know
swing your arm any faster or
Use more bow or anything
The bow just gets condensed and that lets you go that much faster to kick off the dancing speed
So [E] here's the whole tune rubber dolly a little bit of a faster tempo.
Oh
