[F] [Cm]
[Eb] [G]
[Bb] [N] Welcome back to Guitar Breakdowns.
Today I'm doing Ryan Adams' Come Pick Me Up.
It's quite
a simple song so it's a good one for beginners but if you're a bit further down the line
then it's a good one to practice some of those dynamics.
It's in standard tuning but capoed
at the third fret so I'm going to be referring to the notes as if this is fret zero.
So let's
get into it.
[Gm]
[Eb] [Bb] [Gm]
[G] [Bb] [C] So for the intro that's a section that repeats throughout the song whenever
you hear the harmonica coming in.
The chords for that are G, E minor and C.
And what's
quite common in this kind of music is you're holding down the third fret on the B string
[Fm] and third fret [G] on the high E string.
[Bb] You don't let go of them really.
So G, [Gm] E minor and [F] then
C and [Bb] then it goes around again.
G kind of snaps into that E minor.
[Gm] [F] The second time round
it does this walk down so on the C [Bb] down to a B [G] down to an A keeping the G string open
I think all the time.
[Bb]
[Gm]
[Eb]
[G] [Bb] So the verses we have the chords G, E minor, C and A minor and they
vary from the intro slightly.
So the G is the same with these two high notes.
We don't
snap into the E minor this time it's just a straight count of four [Gm] but when we go to
you let go of the high E so that becomes an open high E.
Same with [Eb] the C and [Cm]
then we get
to the A minor.
Standard A minor has this little fill where you do a bit of an upstroke
and let go of the B string.
[G] [Bb]
[Gm] [Eb]
[G] [Cm]
[Eb] [Cm]
[C] [Eb]
[C] So in the bridge that leads us into the chorus we have A minor
which is the same chord as we [Ab] just ended the verse [Cm] section with.
So A minor, [Bb] walk back
up to this B kind of chord.
So it's [A] second fret on the A, open D, [C] open G and first fret
on the B string.
[Cm] [C] [Eb]
So a C and it has this kind of fill where you're releasing the second
fret on the D string and then [F] putting it back on and then hitting the G string.
[C] [Eb]
[Bb] [F]
[Cm] [Eb]
[G] So
for the chorus we've got the chords G, C, A minor and then C again but the C's differ
which we'll go into now.
So the G is the same G we've been using all along with these high
notes on it.
Same with this next [F] C and [Cm]
A minor [Bb] walks up to this B shape [Eb] to a regular C [F]
[Cm] [Eb]
and
then at the end of the chorus it ends on a [F] D but instead of playing it here [Eb] it's like
a C chord that you slide up two frets.
[Bb]
[Eb] [Cm] [Eb]
[G] [F]
[Bb] [Eb]
[F] [Bb] [F]
[N] So for the mid section of the song we've got this D, B and C passage which is played almost
you have to imagine a bit behind the beat.
It's kind of played lazily so you have to
watch the timing of [F] it.
So it's a D and [Bb] then a B played in this way which is second fret
on the A string, open D, open G and third fret on the B string [F] and then C holding this
third fret of the B string.
[Bb]
[F] [Bb]
[F] [Bb] [E]
So that's it.
As I say quite a simple song, some little things going on in there which
are fun to learn.
I hope you found that
