[A] When we lived in Ireland we didn't have a television and my father and my mother had
heard that there was going to be a [E] special on with
[A] Matt Molloy and James Galway [Db] so they
brought us down to [G] a neighbour's house who had a television.
[D] I just remember being fascinated by the [Abm] sound of the flute at that stage and [G] up until then
I tried to play it but with not much success and much frustration.
[N] The fact that I'm at 50 years of age now and I started when I was 9 and I'm still at it
and as long as I can breathe I'll play.
[Ab]
And yes, I mean if you lose the passion, forget it, I mean, go back to the day job.
[Eb]

[Bb] [Ab]
[Gm] [Bb] [Cm]
[Bb] [Eb]
[Gm] [Bb] [F]
[Bb]
[Ab] [C] [Cm]
[Bb] [Eb]
[F] [Bb] [Eb]
The new ideas and new [Bb] things need to happen in order for it to stay alive.
[F]
And I mean it's important that it [Bb] doesn't become [G]
[Cm] something that's [G] protected behind [Bb] glass.
[Ab]
So I think, [C] yeah, I mean the people that came before [Fm] us, they made it their [Gb] own.
I mean it was still within [Ab] the tradition but [C] a sense of belonging, a sense of belonging
and a sense of pride that this [Bb] stamp was placed on it.
[G] And it was their innovations and their [Bb] moving things forward that excited the next [Ab] generation to start to play.
[Gm] [Bb] [Cm]
[Bb]
[Ab] [Bb] [Cm]
I mean if you look at Irish music on [Bb] the written page, for the most [Gm] part it's the skeleton [Bb] of the tune.
[G]
It's kind of [Gm] like, it's the rule book more or less [Fm] of how this particular [F] piece is to be played.
But it's wide open for [Cm] interpretation.
[Bb]
[Ab] [Bb] [Eb]
The melody isn't, if the [Bb] melody isn't strong it [Eb]
won't last.
I mean there's a reason these [Bb] tunes have lasted so [Cm]
long.
They have a quality, [F] whether you can write it out on paper or it's just something that you feel.
I mean there's something inherent in these melodies that is [Bb] the reason why they've endured.
[Eb] [Ab] [Bb] [Eb]
[Ab] [Bb] [Eb]
[Ab] [Bb] [Cm]
[Ab] [C] [Eb]
[Gm] [Bb] [Eb]
