[Bb] She's a smooth [Ebm] operator.
Welcome to WatchMojo [Bb].com and today we're taking a look at the life and career of Chade.
Helen Folasade Adu was born on January 16th, 1959 in Ibadan, Nigeria.
After her parents separated when she was four, her mother took the family to England.
It was there that Chade was first exposed to American soul music.
While studying fashion design at college, she was asked to sing backup in a friend's band.
This led her to join a group called [C] Pride.
[Em] [Am]
With them, she toured the [Bb] UK for several years [D] during the early 1980s.
Chade was soon singled out by record companies.
[B] They were especially [D] captivated by her performance of a song [Dm] she had co-written entitled Smooth Operator.
[G]
[A] However, the [Dm] labels were not interested in [G] the rest of Pride.
[Am] Chade ultimately signed [D] with Epic Records [Gm] and took bassist Paul Denman, [A] keyboard player [Dm] Andrew Hale and [D] saxophonist Stuart Mathewman with her.
Chade and her band released [Dbm] their debut, Diamond Life, in the [A] UK in [D] 1984.
The smooth soul effort reached the [A] second position on the UK Albums Chart and [B] spawned the top ten hit Your Love Is [A] King.
Your Love Is King
[B] Following a UK tour, the group released [A] the album in the US in 1985, and this gave them [D] their first top ten US hit with [A] Smooth Operator.
That same year, Chade [Bm] appeared at Live Aid at London's [D] Wembley Stadium.
These successes, [Bbm] along with her exotic [Ab] looks and sophisticated sense of style, were turning [Bbm] the frontwoman into a star.
Up next was the [Ab] group's sophomore album, Promise.
The R&B and soul record [Bbm] topped both the US and [Ab] UK charts.
It [Bbm] also generated the top ten US hit The Sweetest Taboo
[Ab] [Eb]
[Bbm] and was [Ab] promoted by a world tour.
In [Bbm] 1986, Chade was recognized with a [Fm] Grammy Award for Best New [C] Artist.
1988 saw the release of [F] Stronger Than Pride.
The successful album yielded the top 20 US single Paradise
and was supported by another tour, Around the Globe.
Chade and her band continued their top ten [Fm] success with 1992's Love Deluxe.
That [Bb] disc featured the top 30 US single No Ordinary Love, which later won the [Bm] group another Grammy.
This is no ordinary [Bm] love, no ordinary love.
Next, Chade contributed the Percy Mayfield cover, Please Send Me Someone to Love, to the [B] soundtrack of the movie Philadelphia.
They embarked on [D] the Love Deluxe tour and [Bm] released the greatest hits compilation, The Best of Chade, in 1994.
The members of Chade then decided to focus on their personal lives and projects [Ab] outside the band for the next few years.
The mid [Bm]-90s saw the end of Chade's marriage to Spanish filmmaker Carlos Pliego and the birth of her daughter.
Meanwhile, Denman, Hale and Mathewman released an album as the [A] jazz-funk band Sweetback.
Following a performance at [Bm] the Mobile Awards in 2000, Chade dropped [B] Lover's Rock.
Though the CD [Gb] only peaked within the top 20 in the UK, it reached number [B] 3 in the States.
[Abm] [Gb]
[E] [Gb]
After a sold-out [B] tour, Chade came out with the CD [Bb]-DVD Lover's Live in [Abm] 2002.
That same year, [Gb] Lover's Rock was [B] awarded a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album.
Though the singer was made an officer of the Order of the British Empire, things were quiet for her and the band on the musical front during [Abm] the next few years.
Instead, Chade [B] concentrated on raising her daughter and moved from North [Gbm] London to Gloucestershire.
The band got back [Cm] together to start recording their sixth [G] album at the end of the decade.
Released in 2010, [D] Soldier of Love mixed elements of pop, soft [G] rock, R&B [Gm] and jazz.

The mostly positively reviewed disc also produced the Grammy [Gm]-winning title track.
That same year, Chade appeared on the American reality [C] show Dancing with the Stars.

it's no wonder that Chade is the most successful solo female artist in the history of British music.
