I'm going to tell you a little quick story actually about this song.
This was, I guess this is the first song I've written since being in Nashville and as I [G] was
given the, [E] I had the phone call to say I was [G] going to be doing this [Bb] show, I was with my granddad,
he [E] was 91 two days ago [B] and he said, you know, I mentioned Nashville and he said, oh I had a
girlfriend in Nashville back in the day.
I said, what are you talking about?
How would you have a
girlfriend in Nashville?
You live in the [Bb] Midlands in the UK and he'd been training out here in
Pensacola in Florida as a bomber pilot for the second world war and he'd spent years training
down there and had been visiting all over the place and ended up in [Bb] New Orleans with some of
his crew buddies [B] and met this girl who was from [Bb] Nashville who had a ranch in Nashville and family
were from here and they got on pretty well and [B] started writing to each other and dating and
so I couldn't believe the stories he was telling me and then the kind of crazy moment was he said
he was getting posted back to Canada to then [B] fly back home for the war and he found out he was
going to have to say goodbye [Ab] to this girlfriend and [Bb] they put him on a six-day train through,
you know, through the country passing through Nashville late at night at three in the morning
and he tipped the train conductor and said, but you got to wake me up in Nashville because I've
got to say goodbye to my girlfriend and the next thing he knows he's getting like a rattle on the
door and it's the train conductor and it's 4am and they've passed Nashville and he never got to say
goodbye to this [N] girl and she's left on the platform running up and down people said there'd
been this girl sort of shouting his name and he slept right through [B] and what an incredible story
it's kind of, you know, it's sad but it's good for me because it means I'm here and if he'd
hooked up with this girl maybe this wouldn't happen but so I wrote this song for him called
Wake Me Up in Nashville.
It goes a little bit like this.
[D]
But one thing [Bm] I am sure I'm headed [A] off to war and I may not [D] come back again
what's the cause to [A] win [D] people say we'll [B] change the world but where do I fit [A] in
[Gbm] at [G] least I can't wave [Bm] goodbye to [Bm] the apple of [A] my eye
all [G] this crazy [D] crazy world so [G] don't [Bm] let me sleep I've [G] got a promise [Bm] to keep you [G] will be on my mind
saying be strong [D] in this fight [G] carrying [B] me through these troubled [D] times
so wake me up in [Bm] Nashville because it's where I wanna be and I will meet you on the platform
[G] at [A] 315 and [D] I will look [B] into your eyes [Bm] in the fading [E] autumn light
[D] wake me [Bm] up in [G] Nashville [A] let me hold you [D] tonight do you understand as I put that twenty dollars
in your hand the task [Bm] that you must do may mean little [A] to you but it [G] means everything [D] to me
friends they [A] may get lost [Bm] as they're fighting [G] for what they [Dm] believe but if you [A] are all I've got
[Gbm] with your picture [G] in my pocket [D] watch capturing that smile [Bm] is all I [G] wanna do for [D] now
maybe [A] I will [Bm] [G] make it back somehow don't [Bm] let me sleep I've [G] got a promise [Bm] to keep
you [G] will be on [Bm] my mind [G] saying be strong [D] in this fight carrying [B] me through these [D] troubled times
so wake me up [Bm] in Nashville [G] because it's where I [A] wanna be and I [D] will meet you on [Bm] the platform
[G] at [A] 315 and I [A] will look into [Bm] your eyes in the fading autumn [D] light
wake me up [Bm] in Nashville [G] let [D] me hold [G] you I'm [D] [Bm]

made a [Bm] terrible mistake now [G] it's 4 a.m. [G] you said oh you I could [D] depend [B] Pensacola on the [D] journey's end wake [Bm] me up in Nashville [G] this is where [D] I wanna be and I will meet [Bm] you on the platform at [A] 315 and I will look [Bm] into your eyes [B] in the fading autumn light [D] wake me [Bm] up in [G] Nashville [A] let me hold you tonight [Bm] [G] [B] [D] [Bm] [G] [A]
