[A] Hey [N] there, my name is Flavio Lira and I'm here at the headquarters of Lesson Face in
New York City and today we're going to learn some samba.
Samba is a music that's generated from percussion instruments.
The bass came much later, so everything we do in the bass is derived from the percussion
instruments such as the surdo, the pandero.
The bass line we're going to play is based off of the surdo pattern, which is like this.
Alright, how do we do that on the bass?
We play usually, most of the time we're playing one and five.
And since, as I sang, you want to have a low note here, so we use the five on the lower
[A] string, just like this.
[E]
This will be beats one and three, if you're singing four four.
And also, you're going to see that I'm adding a ghost note in there.
Why is that?
Also because of the surdo.
The surdo player is going to play
What is that?
That is to stop the head from vibrating before the next stroke.
And that also helps keep time.
And we're going to add that ghost note the same way.
Alright, for this example I'm going to use the progression of a song that most of you
will probably know.

Right, simple enough, huh?
This, I would say, is the essence, is the very essence of the surdo, the bass playing
for the basic samba.
You can work on that and have that very solid, then you can go in different directions.
Another one is partido alto.
Partido alto, the pattern that we're going to play, comes from the pandeiro.
The pandeiro, it will play like this.
Let's check that out with a metronome.
So I have a metronome here in 85, and that will be the half note in 85.
[F#]
[N]
[F#]
This rhythm is pretty syncopated, as you will notice.
So you might want to clap that with me for a little while to get used to it.
One, two, three, four.
You can check out below the link for the PDF with all the explanations and written lines.
Now I'm going to play the same song we played before, but in a partido alto view.
Check it out.

Ok, so here we were very connected to the partido alto pattern.
We're just going to go, con, con, con, con, con, con, con, con, con.
But where the bass players usually stay, it's right in the middle, inside of that very basic line,
which is a pan, kakon, pauda, kakon, and the syncopated version.
So now I'm going to show how you can create variations based on these two grooves that we learned,
and play around with that.
