Bar rooms, whatever you want to call them, when I [D] was 12 years [F#] old, see, singing country music.
We didn't do that in Louisiana.
You know, if you're tall enough to put your money on the bar, you can go in.
_ I'm one of the lucky guys in country [A#] music.
Because by the time I [F#] was 14 years old, I got to play music with [D] people like George Jones,
and Meryl Haggard, [D#] Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, Kev [D] Kwanen, _ Ray Price, a whole bunch of them good country singers, you know.
That was back when we had stylists, we called them [F#] vocalists.
When they came on the radio, you [D] knew right away who was singing the song.
You didn't have to wonder who was singing, [Dm] and you didn't have to wait for the disc jockey to tell you who was singing.
[F#] You knew who it was.
Nowadays, I can't tell them apart.
They all sound alike to me.
I ain't kidding you.
I don't know what the word is.
[D] But a couple years ago, my old [G#] record label called up and said,
Sam, we're [F#] going to a tribute album to George Jones.
We'd like you to be on the album.
I said, I'd love to be on the album.
What songs is everybody doing?
They said, everybody gets to do their favorite George Jones song.
I said, well that's great, because when I was about 14 years old,
[D] I used to do an old song that Jones had out, [F] I think in 1962.
It was just a good old honky-tonk song.
It went something like,
[A] An empty bottle, [E] a broken heart, [Bm] and you're still on [F] my mind.
[A#] _ _ [G#] Yeah, that was back before Jones started drinking [Dm] all that cough syrup.
You know, [D] he was sick hard.
You know what [A#] I mean.
Anyway, they said, you can't do [C#] that one.
I said, well that don't seem [F#] right.
Everybody gets to do their favorite Jones song.
I don't.
They said, we already have one picked out [F] for you.
I said, what might that be?
And they said, [E] he'd sing all of them [C] till I drowned. _ _
[F] She [D] told me [A#] you'll forget in time. _ _ _
As the years [C] went through, holy God, now I'm alive. _
She still prays for me.
_ [F] _ _
[C] Kept her happy, [F] oh Lord. _ _
When I freeze [A#] down, _ _ _
He still loves me [C] through it all.
[G] _ _
_ I'll bring him [F] back again. _ _
[C#] He gets the letters [F#] back, _ _ _
_ _ 1819, [B] 16th Moon. _ _
_ The [C#] Adelaide man. _ _
_ Every single [F#] time I look at you, _
I can see you. _ _ _ _
_ Oh, but I can [B] see no tear. _ _
_ Oh, it's [C#] so bad. _
Her stomach's [F#] my religion. _ _
_ Hey, you know,
I used to call her baby honey. _ _ _ _
They brought ice cream [B] from the store. _ _
And soon they'll carry [C#] him home.
[D#] _ _
[C#] I used to call her baby honey.
[F#] _ _ [C#] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ You know, she came to see me one last time.
_ [A#m] _ [B] Oh, we all want to shoot.
_ _ _ _ [C#] _ _ [G#] And it can't [C#] run, Mama.
_ _ _ [F#] Oh, people heard.
I saw my husband die.
[G#] _ _
[F#] They were angry, [A#m] but [B] they were strong. _
And some of them died.
[C#] _ _ [D#] _ _
[C#] _ _ _ _ I [D#] saw my [D] husband die.
_ [B] To death.
[G#] _ _ _ _ _ _ [F#] To death.
_ _ _ _ [N] To death.
