[C] What [N] is up guys, it is me Max, back again with another guitar tutorial and today we're
going to be taking a look at Save Me by Jelly Roll.
And first of all, what a gorgeous, gorgeous song.
It is deep, it is dark, it is beautiful, it has an acoustic guitar, what more could you ask for?
And it is even more fun to play along on your guitar because we're in kind of a best of
both worlds situation here.
We get to do some fingerpicking and we get to strum some chords in the chorus as well.
We're going to take a look at all of that, we are in standard [C] tuning, no capo, no nothing
[N] needed and without any further ado, let's jump right in.
We actually only have to take a look at two different riffs here.
[A] The first one being the fingerstyle verse and the second one being the chorus.
And we're obviously going to start by [G] taking a look at that verse.
And our first chord here is going [C] to be a C major.
We take our first finger, which is the index finger and put that onto the first fret on
the second string.
Second finger [Am] onto the second fret on the fourth string and third finger on the third
fret on the fifth string.
And we don't really have to worry about muting any strings here because we're not going to
be strumming the entire chord.
Instead we're going to be picking [Bb] specific strings with our fingers.
And how that works is we take [Am] our thumb [C] to pick the fifth string, index [G] finger to pick
the third string, which is the G [C] string, the second finger or middle finger to pick the
second string, which is the B string [E] and our ring finger will be picking the higher
[C] E string, so the first string.
And what we're going to be doing here is we're going to be picking fifth string, second string,
third string, and then first string, second string, third string.
So it's fifth, second, third, first, second, third.
And we're going to be [Ab] doing that twice on the C [Am] so we [C] just go just like that.
Then we move on to [Em] our second chord which is going to be an E minor.
[Ab] We take our second finger, put that onto the second fret on the fifth string and our third
finger onto the second fret on the fourth string.
And now we're going to be doing the exact same thing on the [Am] exact same strings.
So once again, fifth string, second string, third string, and first string, second string,
third [B] string.
[Em] Twice [B] again.
[Em] So so far [C] we've got the [B] C,
[Em]
the E minor.
Next up, [Am] we move on to an [N] A minor.
So from here over to here, so quite an easy switch.
We've got our first finger on the first fret on the second string, second finger on the
second fret [A] on the fourth string, and third finger on the second fret on the third string.
And you guessed it, we're going to be picking the exact same strings in the exact same order [Bb] twice.
So fifth string, second string, third string, [Db] first string, second string, [A] third string.
[Am]
[Gm] So so [C] far it's [B] C, [Em]
E minor, [Am]
A minor, and our last chord is going to be an F major 7.
We've got our first finger on the first fret on the second string, second finger [Bb] on the
second fret on the third string, third finger on the third fret on the fifth [G] string, and
pinky on the third fret [Am] on the fourth string.
But we can cheat our way [N] through this chord in the verse and just put our third finger
onto the third fret on the fourth string and leave our pinky out of the equation because
we won't be needing that fifth string at this point because this time around we're going
to be picking pretty much the exact same strings but we're going to be replacing the fifth
[Bb] string with the fourth string.
So it's [G] fourth string, second string, third string, first, second, third.
[F] [Am]
So as you can see [G] we don't really have to play the full F major 7 but you can obviously
[A] do that if you want to in order to practice it because we're going to be coming [G] back to
that chord in the chorus anyway.
So [C] that is actually our entire verse riff.
[B] [Em]
[A] [Am]
[F]
[Am]
[C] We play that a couple of [G] times and right before we get into the chorus we only play that F
major 7 once and then we jump onto our last new [Am] chord of the song which is going to [G] be
a G.
We put our first [A] finger onto the second fret on the fifth string, second finger on the
third fret on the sixth string, and third finger on the [D] third fret on the first string.
[A] And now we're [Ab] once again going to be picking pretty much the exact same strings [Gm] but we
[Am] are going [G] to start off on the sixth string instead of the usual fifth string.
So it's just sixth string, second string, third string, first string, second string,
third string.
So up [Ab] until the F major 7 we play the riff as [C] usual [F] and then we just [Am] play the F major
[G] 7 once and the G once.
And then we get [Abm] into the chorus.
The chorus is going to be rather easy since we already know all of the chords necessary
and they're pretty [A] much going to be in the exact same [C] order as in the verse.
So our first chord is going to be the C [Em] followed by the E minor, [Am]
A minor, F major 7, [G] and G.
So [A] what do we do with those chords?
Well the rhythm is actually rather [C] simple.
[Em]
[Am] So
[F] [G]
what we do is we [C] just go down, down, up, down.
[Am] And we do that [Ab] four times on each [C] chord.
Four times on the [Em] C, four times on the E [Am] minor, four times on the A minor, and now only twice
on the F major 7 and twice [G] on the G.
[N] That's what we do the first and third time we play this riff.
So we do what I just showed you once and then we're going to be playing the exact same chords
except at the very end we just stay on the F major 7 and don't move on to a G.
So the first time around [C]
it's
[Em]
[Am]
[F]
[G] [Bb] [C] And the second time around it's
[Em]
[Am]
[F]
[Am]
And the third time around, once again, it's [E] the first version so with the [Gm] G at the end.
And that is already the entire song.
