I was diagnosed with breast cancer and my [F#] world flipped upside down.
I immediately reacted by becoming very, very quiet.
I just felt like that my favorite thing, words, were leaving me [G] empty.
They were falling flat.
They were shallow, superficial, [E] and they just didn't [D#] convey what was inside of my heart.
And I was frustrated because as a writer, we write whether or not any of you ever read it.
I've told people that all week.
I've got a [N] new book and I've written this book for probably a period of 30 years because
we write just because it's inside.
We have to put it on paper.
And so for about a year of surgeries and chemotherapy, I stared at a blank piece of paper.
For 23 years, I've written songs for our group and I could not say a thing.
I didn't know what subject I wanted to write about.
I didn't know how to say it and I didn't know what to say.
And I became very, very frustrated.
My husband suggested that I get together with some writers.
He said, maybe this will inspire you because I don't get to collaborate a lot because of
the schedule and I enjoy the process.
And I thought, you know what?
Maybe he's right.
And one afternoon I got together on our bus with Wayne Han and Joel Lindsay and we planned
this ahead of time.
They came on my bus right during the middle of chemotherapy.
I'm sitting up front with my little thinned out hair and my bus pajamas on and we began
to look through my notes of [B] a briefcase that I've been carrying for [G#] 30 years now.
And I [Bm] found two slips of paper [D#] that said, when there are no words to say and no prayers
[F#] that I can pray, hear my heart.
When I've tried all I can try and I've cried all I can cry, hear my heart.
[E] And Wayne and Joel both said, I think that's it.
I think that's our title.
Let's start from [G#] there.
And Joel, who had battled cancer [F#] twice before, started this song with a line that says, sometimes
I feel no one's ever been in this place before.
This [G#] is hard.
[B] That's my favorite line of this song.
Hear my heart.
Because there's no way to pretty up cancer.
[F#m] There's no way to pretty up the [D] difficult times of your life.
[B] But there is the peace of knowing that he [D] hears what's inside.
[E]
Sometimes I feel no one's ever been in this [A]
[D] place before.
[Bm] This is hard.
[A] And I'm not sure that I can [B] do this anymore.
[A] I [D] know someday I'll [Dm] lose my mind and all this won't seem real.
[A] But Lord, right now I need you [B] to know just how [A] I feel.
When there are no words to say and no prayers that I can pray, hear my [D] heart.
[D]
When I don't have strength to try and I've tried all, [E] hear my heart.
[F#m] Because you know every fear [E] and [A] every doubt I cannot speak.
[D] You know all the ways I need you [Dm] and all the [B] ways I'm weak.
So [A] I'll be quiet so you can hear my [F#m] [D] heart.
[A]
Every now and then I [E] recall a simple phrase or [D]
melody.
[Bm] It converts and it quiets.
It [A] lifts me up and then it carries me [D] far above the pain and hurt [Dm] I think will never.
The song [A] speaks words I cannot and it [E] calms the fears within.
When [A] there are no words to say and no prayer that I can pray, [D] hear my heart.
[Em] [D] When I don't have strength to try and I've cried all, [D] hear [E] my [A] heart.
[E] [F#m] Because you know every fear [A] and every doubt I cannot speak.
You [D] know all the ways I need [Dm] you and all the [B] ways I'm weak.
[C#m] So I'll be quiet [A]
[E] so you can [F#m] hear [C#m]
my [D#] [Dm] heart.
Lord, [A] I'll be quiet [E] so you can [A] hear my [F#m] heart.
[D] [A] [D] [A]
