Ships in the Night- Mat Kearney piano lesson Todd Downing chords
Start Jamming...
Hey everybody, I will play you just a little bit of this song and then I'll teach it to
you right [F#m] afterwards.
Locked ships in the night, keep [Dm] passing me by, [A] just wasting time, trying to prove who's right.
[F#m]
Cool, just kind of keep the song going.
Cool little part.
Here's a couple ideas on doing it.
I'm doing that [A] octave and then I have the sustain pedal down so it's like, that goes
through a lot of it.
If that's hard to do, like an octave like that, what you can do is just kind of like,
that will work just [F#] fine.
Okay, the left hand, F sharp like so.
If octaves are okay, you might want to do octaves, [F#m] that would sound cool.
[D]
[A]
[F#] One and fives work great.
Best way to do it is with your pinky and your thumb like that.
I'm doing it like that just so you can get a good view of it.
F sharp like that, F sharp minor.
[D] D like so.
A [A] like so.
[E] E like so.
Alright, so real slow, starting on F [F#m] sharp.
[A] To [Dm] D,
[A] to A, to E.
Alright, just doing it like this, starting on [F#m] F sharp.
[Dm] D.
[A] A.
Keep on [F#] going like that.
Cool.
So those are a couple ideas on the chorus parts.
Once you get into the rapping part, that kind of goes away.
[G#] So, what you can do, I'll give [F#m] you a couple different ideas.
So, let me start with a kind of like a cool one.
Okay, so starting on the rap.
Like ships and letting cannonballs fly.
Say what you [D] mean.
[A] Fire, [D] those friends from the mine.
[A] South, down, down the driveway.
[Em] [F#m]
You can do a pattern like that.
So here's what I'm doing there.
Because the piano is not really pronounced in that part.
So, doing that for an F sharp.
Same thing for [D] D.
[A] [D] A like so.
[A] E like so.
[E]
Okay, another [F#] idea.
You can just do the same exact thing for the left and right hand.
Ships and not letting cannonballs fly.
[D] Say what you mean.
Turns into a fire.
Fists [A] fly from a mile to turn south.
You [E] down the driveway, me on the couch.
Chasing [F#] your dreams from the violence with grey.
Try [D] to believe.
Just kind of keep it on going.
That would be a way to do it.
Because it just repeats the pattern over and over again.
Maybe one other idea.
[F#m]
Now I'm just going to [G#] hit random notes [E] [A]
out of those five in the right hand.
[F]
[F#m] Okay.
Ships and not [C#m] letting cannonballs fly.
[A] Say what you mean.
Turns into a fire.
Fists fly from a [Em] mile to turn south.
You [A] down the driveway, me on [B] the couch.
[A] Chasing your dreams from the violence with grey.
Try to believe.
Cool.
[Em] So, doing it from a singer's perspective.
[F#m] Those are a couple different ideas on ways you can play by ear.
Put a backing track if you were going to sing along with it.
And then every once in a while come back to the choruses and the bridge at the end.
[Dm] [A]
[F#m] Love that about music.
That's a pretty [Fm] easy little pattern and it just sounds cool.
I like when people can take simple ideas and come up with cool stuff on them.
Anyway, that's how to play that song.
And the piano part that's going in it.
So, decently easy.
And I hope it's kind of helpful.
And helps you kind of play it if you're kind of a singer or you just kind of want to
