and Rich, but [C] he's releasing his first solo [D] project today and it's already creating a
huge buzz across this country.
It's a working class album that's touching the nerve of some
hard economic times and the folks who are going through it.
John Rich is here with us
this morning to talk a little bit about it.
And first thing, can we show some pictures
of your video?
You're still working on it.
Sure.
Yeah, an incredible video that we just shot that's coming out later this week, starring
Mickey Rourke and Chris Christopherson, if you can believe that.
Wow.
No, it's good to see both of them actually.
And this looks good.
Now, did you mean to
write a song that would capture all the feelings everybody had?
I meant to write a song that described [N] how pissed off I was about everything going on
right now when I turn on my news at the end of the day.
Coming from a hardworking family
in Texas, you know, we lived in a double wide trailer in West Texas and I never went to
college.
I've been a taxpayer my entire adult life.
And to see guys like the CEO, Merrill
Lynch, buying $38,000 toilets kind of started getting on my nerves a little bit.
You got it all in this song.
As a country songwriter, I sat down and I wrote this song on behalf of myself, just
my own feelings.
And apparently the rest of America feels the same way.
Everybody's talking about it.
We've got to get to the song because I want everybody to
hear the song that we're talking about.
Out today from Son of a Preacher Man, shutting Detroit down.
This is for all the hardworking Americans across this country here, shutting Detroit
down.
Play it, boys.
[G]
My
[C] [G]
daddy taught me in this country everyone the same.
You work hard for your dollar and
you never pass the blame when it don't go your way.
And now I see all [C] these big shots
[G] whining on my [C] evening news [G] about how they're [C] losing billions and [G] it's up to me and you
to [C] come running to the [G]
rescue.
[D] Well, pardon me [Em] if I don't shed [C] a tear.
Because [D] you're selling make [Em]-believe and we don't [G] buy that here.
[C] Because in [Em] the real world [C] they're shutting Detroit [G]
down.
While [Em] the false man takes [D] his own place, [C] gets on out [D] of town.
And D [Em].C.'s bailing out [C] their bankers as farmers' docks [C] shut and drown.
Yeah, while [G] they're living it up [F] on Wall Street in [C] that New York City [G] town.
Here in the real world [D] they're shutting Detroit down.
[C] Here in the real world [D] they're shutting [G] Detroit down.
[C] Well, that old man's [G] been working in that plant most all his life.
Now his pension plan's been cut in half and he came forward to die.
And it's [C] a crying shame.
Because he [G] ain't the one to blame.
And [D] when I look [Em] down and see his [C] calloused hands.
[D] Well, let me tell [Em] you, friend, it gets [C] me fighting back.
Because in [Em] the real world [C] they're shutting [G] Detroit down.
While [Em] the false man takes [D] his own place, [G] gets on out [D] of town.

Yeah, [G] while they're living it up [F] on Wall Street in [C] that New York City [G] town.
Here in the real world [D] they're shutting [G] Detroit down.
I'll play the fiddle, son.
[Em] [C] [G]
[Bb] [C] [G]
But that's still the entire [Em] New York City.
[G]
[C]
Yeah, [G] while they're living it [F] up on Wall Street [C] in that New York [G] City town.

[C] Here [G] in the real [D] world they're shutting [Em] Detroit [G] down.
Here in the real world [D] they're shutting [G] Detroit down.
They're shutting Detroit [C] down.
[G] Made in the USA, baby.
