Aloha, this is Harry from Kailua again.
Let's give you more slacky ideas.
Today we're going to focus on [N] the Hawaiian vamp section.
So what is a vamp or Hawaiian vamp?
Well, a vamp is a musical filler.
So in rock and roll you might hear things [G] like, [C] _ _ _ _ [C#] _ [Em] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [A#] _ [D] _
[G] in jazz you might hear, [E] _ _ [Am] _ _
_ _ [Em] _ _ [G#m] _ _ [Am] _ _
[Em] in Hawaiian
music you might hear things like, _ _
[C] _ _ _ _ [G] _ [Em] _ _ [C] _
_ or you might go to [E] a, you come to Hawaii and go to
a luau and you [F#] hear the band start, [G] hey aloha people how are you doing, and [Am] they'll play this vamp.
[Em] So a vamp [C] can be used as [E] an intro, fillers in between verses, it can be used for endings,
it's a filler.
So come back, I'm going to change the guitars and I'll show you some examples of Hawaiian
slacky [D] versions of a Hawaiian vamp.
Okay, we're back and _ I'm going to teach you the two different Hawaiian vamps.
There's many of them.
Here's one of them _ [G] _ _ and here's [D] a second one.
[G] _ _ _ _ Now just [D] repeat again.
_ [G] _ _ _ _ [D] _ _
[G] _ _ _ _ [Fm] So now [G] let's do a close up and I'll play each one separately a few times so you can try
to keep up with [N] it. _ _ _
So here's a close up of a Hawaiian vamp number one example.
[D] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [N] This example is good because here's an example of something that doesn't happen in other
styles I find.
This is a really Hawaiian thing.
It's in this little section where [E] I slide.
So if you read, follow along by looking at the tab.
So I do thumb, do a [D] hammer on pull off, then I play these two [C] together.
I use my baby finger, [D] you're welcome to use a ring or [G] a ring finger, [C] but I use baby finger.
And then [G] when I slide up, notice [F#] the way I wrote the arrow, it's [G] a slow slide and then
I have a hold there.
So I don't re-pick this [D] note.
So it's like _ bass, _ together, _ [G] slide, bass while it's ringing.
And then I play the_
_ So the tricky part is, it's right after this slide, _ you hit the bass without re-picking this.
So I don't want you to go and pick it again.
It's sustaining.
And then you play the four, the five, [D] the zero.
So I'll play this three times real slow and you get the feel of it. _
_ [C] _ [D] _ [G] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [D] Second time, _ [C] _ [G] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _ _
_ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ sped up [D] a little bit of sounds. _
[G] _ _ _ _ [D] _ _ [G] _ _
[D] _ _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ [G] _ [E] _ _ _
Okay, so here's vamp number two. _ _
All the way to the slide and the bass note is exactly the same.
[D] _
Just the ending is [G] different. _ _ _ _
_ _ [D] So I'll play this slow and you can follow by looking at the tab.
So thumb, hammer on pull off, together, [Bm] slow slide [G] again, keep it ringing, hit the bass
and then you're going to do a hammer on pull off together.
And the last note is not a thumb note, it's a finger note. _ _
[D] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
So I'll play this three times really slow.
[D] _ _ _ _
_ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [D] _ _ [G] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [D] _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [G#] _ _ [D] So I'll play the first one and then the second one right after.
And this is what it sounds like.
_ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ Maybe I'll play that three times in a row, together.
So here's _ number one and two, right back to [D] back.
_ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ _ [D] _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [D] _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ _ [E] So here's a [D] little bit quicker.
_ [G] _
_ _ [D] _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _ [G] _
_ _ _ Check back.
Have fun.
_ _ _ _ _ [N] _ _ _
