_ Hey, this is Pete Schmidt.
[G] Thanks for checking this video and my channel out.
So for this week's tutorial, I thought I'd cover a song by Slim Harpo called Hip Shake.
Now it's my own version that I've adapted and did some improvisation as well.
It's a rather upbeat boogie in the key of A.
So we'll get started with the tutorial and thanks again for checking in. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ All right, key of A, just one chord.
_ There's an A and here's an A dominant 7.
[F#] And it's an alternate bass note type groove.
So I'm using my thumb and index finger to do that.
And my thumb is taking care of these [A] bass notes. _ _ _
_ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ All right, so it's an A, a G, an [C] A and a C.
[A] And my index finger is up picking this A. _
_ Second fret of the G string.
So it takes some getting used to these alternate bass lines, but you can start with this. _
_ _ Just playing those A's. _ _
Then I'm going to add in my G. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ And then the next step is to add in that C.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Am] _ _ [A] _ _ Here it is really slow.
_ _ _ [F] _ _ [A] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ _ [Am] _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [N] Okay, so I added a couple of figures in addition to my alternate bass groove.
And they're actually not played by the original rhythm guitar player on the song.
But the band is playing it in a call and response way.
[A] So what I'm doing _ is_
_ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
All right, I'm playing it quite a bit faster actually.
But I'm [Dm] doing a bend.
_ [A] _ _ _ _ _
_ [Dm] _ _ _ [A] _ _ _ _
_ _ [Am] _ _ [A] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ All right, so I'm doing this _ two-step [D] bend. _
_ _ [Dm] _ _ [A] I'm going up and then back down and hitting the root.
_ _ _ Back to my alternate bass note groove. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Am] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [A] _ _ _ _
Okay, that's the second figure.
And it corresponds to the vocal part as well.
And again, the band is playing this _ [Am] part. _
[A] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ Okay, so I've adapted it slightly so that I can maintain my alternate bass line groove.
_ _ [Am] _ _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Am] _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ [Am] _ _
[A] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ So those are the two [A#] figures that I've adapted to this.
And they correspond with the vocal part.
And it's a call and response that the band is playing. _
Backing up Slim Harpo.
_ _ So I hope you enjoyed this tutorial on Slim Harpo and his song, Hip Shake.
It's a great boogie.
It takes a while to get used to those alternate bass lines.
But when they come together, they can be really great.
