Hello Spooniverse, my name is Abby the Spoon Lady and some of y'all might know me from street music or the radio or
Even videos like this one.
Today, I want to talk to you about self-image and our image of others
I'm a professional spoon player and in the past I've had videos that have had a million or two million hits here or there
but in 2017 I posted a video that went around the internet something like 300
Million times or more
When that video was posted I got responses from all over the world
Folks wanting to tell me where they were when they heard the music
What it reminded them of about folks that used to play spoons in their family or at their church
You know [C#] really really intimate details about people's lives people's stories and it was really touching and moving
In fact, I had so many messages and so much stuff going on in the internet that my website crashed
and I couldn't get to all the messages and I
Still can't but there was a darker side to all this attention
A lot of the comments were really really negative and really really mean
Folks were talking about my weight
Calling me a scarecrow
Telling me to eat a sandwich a lot of people were talking about my clothing and derogatory ways
I wear what is comfortable and if I needed [F] to have any kind of excuse whatsoever to wear overalls
then I would tell you that it was on my way to tell some stories about riding trains and
Train hopping and other parts of my life and those happen to be the overalls that I used to hop trains in
There were a lot of comments about dumb mountain people and
I hate to break it to you though.
I'm from Kansas
That's right
Kansas
Kansas
No mountains
Kansas don't get me wrong.
I've been playing spoons [E] off of the Blue Ridge Parkway for five or six years now
and it's not lost to me the
Novelty of coming right off the Blue Ridge Parkway and finding a barefoot toothless spoon player playing music
But I'm barefoot not because I'm trying to represent something
But because I like to be barefoot
[C#] Has nothing to do with any kind of roots or this or that
I just feel younger when my feet are bare and I'm happy with that and it's okay
Maybe you should walk around barefoot, too
[F] Which brings me to my last point? teeth
If you haven't noticed I don't have any and that should be fine
There's nothing wrong with not having some teeth.
It's okay if you've got some bad ones, too
People lose teeth for all sorts of different reasons
Using teeth as tools tobacco sugar
medications diabetes having a blow to the face
[G] accidents violence
genetics gum disease braces
Do you know that women who have multiple babies are more likely to have tooth issues?
by the age of 50 most Americans have lost an average of 12 teeth and I know that that's a round number and
discrepancies happen between
different economic statuses but
It's just something that happens and in America.
It feels like everybody's so scared to talk about it
Because I don't have teeth people watch me in the stores
They think you know when I get pulled over I get my car searched more often
But none of that has to do with me as a person
[F#] None of it [B] at all
people judge me and walk by and say terrible things to me they comment things all the time and
It's this video that really put things in perspective for me
It made me feel like I had a weight on my shoulders to tell people how important it was
For them to go out and be themselves.
I should be proud of me
Little bit of a disclaimer.
I'm not a doctor.
I'm just a spoon lady
As far as your health is concerned that needs to be discussed between you and your doctor
But there's no reason for anybody to feel ashamed that they don't have teeth
That's silly
The truth is you should just go out and be yourself, and it doesn't matter whether or not you have teeth
maybe you're missing an eye or an ear or a limb or maybe your nose is crooked or
Who cares who cares?
When we criticize somebody else it doesn't say anything about that person it says something about our need to be critical and
If folks aren't happy with who you are
Maybe you should just find some other folks
The holidays are coming up
So consider this
Just be yourself
Put it all out there on the table, and I mean your feelings not your teeth
It's important
