Okay.
In this lesson we're going to look at Soldier's Joy, which is a great old-time tune out of the key of D.
[Abm] And this is the basic melody for it, so it is going to have that old-time feel to it.
And then when we [G] look at an advanced melody, we'll do more of a Texas-style feel on that.
[D] But this is out of the key of D.
I like to start it off with a couple of chops and maybe some saws, potatoes as some folks call them.
So we'll do that.
[B] [Bm] So, second finger on the D string, third finger on the A.
And we'll do two chops and then saws.
Here we go.
[D]
[Em] Okay.
So I went ahead and started in on the tune.
One thing on those chops, or the saws, I slid my second finger into it, which is still a basic thing, but you can do that.
So after you get those four saws in
Your up-o here.
[Dm] So it's 3-1 [D] open.
Now, you can do saw stroke all the way through this.
You can go like this.
[Em]
[A] That's perfectly fine.
But if you start with a bow pattern, when you hit that open A string, and then do [D] up-bow slur.
[Am] So that might be something to break out as an exercise.
Separate.
So it's down-bow on the A string.
Now to a 2 on the D string, and up-bow [Bb] slur.
So 2, open 2, [Ab] and then [G] back to the down-bow on the A [D] string.
[B]
[G] That's a good exercise, and we use that quite a bit in this tune.
So I'll show you that way.
You can do saw strokes, but I'll show you the way where you're doing the slurs.
[D]
[Em] So the second [Ab] time you end up with 3-1-1.
And you go back up one more time.
[D]
[Gm] Now, here's a real simple turnaround.
[Bm] [B] [Bb]
[Bm] So it starts off open E, and then 1.
[Bb]
[G] Repeat the A part.
Alright.
In this lesson we're looking at the advanced melody for Soldier's Joy out of the key of D.
It's a good old time tune, but we're going to spice it up a little bit.
Play some Texas style licks in it, [Bm] and some double stops.
So let me play through a couple of rounds in the first part, and then we'll break those down.
Here we go.
[D]
[Em] [D]
[B] [D]
[A] [D]
[Bb] [N]
[D] So, start off on the 3rd finger.
Let me kind of break down some of the things I did.
I did hammer-ons.
2-3.
[Bb] [D]
Right there was a pull-off lick.
So I did 3-2-1, open.
[Am]
[Gm] Right here, I'm syncopating this.
And I'm also playing a drone on the A string.
So, 3rd finger on the D.
[A] Open A.
And then I go down to a 1st finger, and open A.
But I punch that 1st finger.
[D] Like so.
[A] [D]
[A] Now, [D]
I did a walk-up run.
2-3-low-4.
So that's A-flat, G-sharp.
[Ab]
[D]
[Em] [E]
[Eb] Slurring that up-bow.
[D] And I'm still keeping that rocking bow pattern going on between the A and the D.
[B]
[D] So that was the same lick that we [E] did in [C] the basic melody.
I [E] think we did that in the B part in the basic melody.
But I'm sliding up my 2nd finger to jazz it up just a little bit.
[Eb] So when you come down [Bm] to that, you hit the G just a little low.
[Gb]
[B] [Gb] [Bm]
[Gbm]
[B] [D] [Bm]
[G] [Bm]
