Hi, this is Sue.
I'm going to demonstrate Songs to Aging Children Come, a song that
Joni Mitchell wrote in early 1967 and started playing on her club circuit before she started
recording.
_ _ She would introduce this song by saying that she found it very strange that
people who she knew a couple of years ago, like in high school, were now acting like
little kids in dressings, like very young, like girls had bows in their hair and they
were wearing [D] knee socks and Mary Janes.
That was the style in the 60s with the mini skirts.
So she thought that was kind of funny and _ got this line, Songs to Aging Children Come.
But _ _ this song is not funny.
This song is very sad and was actually used _ _ for Alice's Restaurant
during a funeral scene.
And the story to that is that Joni did not _ _ want the original song to be
played, but did allow for _ another person to play the song in the movie.
_ She's very strict with her
publishing rights [E] and still is to this [B] day.
_ _ But this is a great song, _ another classic song from
the Clouds album.
_ And _ so I will tell you that the tuning _ is low B.
It's a B, F sharp, B, _ _ F sharp, B, _ _
E flat, or D sharp. _ _
_ And _ _ I can show you how the tuning sounds. _ _
_ _ _ _ [B] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [F#] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
Now this [G#] tuning _ _ can also be played
_ _ _ with a capo or up to C.
_ _ There's a couple other songs that are played in this tuning.
_ _ _ [A#] _
_ The old song [B] Carnival in Kenora, which is a great old song she played during her cafe days.
And also _ Raised on Robbery is played in this tuning from Court and Spark.
_ [C] So _ _ that's a fun song to play.
_ _ [F#] Let's talk about a couple of the chord shapes in this song.
_ There's a lot of bar chords, _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [G] _ mostly _ starting on the eighth fret. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[F] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ And there's also a little [D#] run at the beginning of the intro that's pretty, pretty [B] nice, _ _
down on the 12th fret. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ And there's a lot of finger picking that goes on in this song too.
So _ _ _ [F#] one, _ she does have a transition [G] that she uses that goes like this. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ And that's written out in the tab. _ _
So _ if you go through the whole, the full _ chord progression,
it goes _ _ _ down _ _ _
_ [F#] _ _ _ _ _ _ [F] _
_ _ _ _ [B] _ _ _ _
to [A] the 10th fret.
_ _ _ [G] _
_ _ _ _ [F#] _ _ _ _
_ _ [B] _ _ _ _ _
Then you go up to the third fret.
[D] _ _ _
_ _ [F] _ A little slide there. _
_ _ _ _ A little run. _
_ _ _ [B] _ _ _ Fourth _ [E] fret.
[D#] Oops, sorry. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
And [A#] that makes up the whole [B] song. _ _ _ _
_ _ So _ _ follow along with the [B] tab and have fun with it. _
