Friends of the show, I love saying that,
Drayton Farley and Jonathan Payton [Em] both said
that I needed to listen to Nolan [D] Taylor,
so everybody turn it up, it's a new year.
Hope y'all are doing good.
Let's check out [B] Nolan Taylor's 68.
[Bm] [A] Beard [G] game is strong, hat game is [D] strong,
I'm already in love.
[Bm]
[A] [G]
[Bm] Lighting up cigarettes [F#m] in the seventh grade
[A] is what my mother [G] taught me.
As [Bm] she was falling asleep, [F#m] driving down 68,
[A] drove just to get us [G] back safe.
[A] Wishing hard [D] that I [Bm] could escape.
Every time I hear songs like this,
I realized how disconnected I am
from having a really tough home life.
My mom was a saint, is a saint, my dad's incredible.
I've never ever experienced how difficult it must be
to have such a tough home life.
So every time I listen to songs like this,
it makes me thankful, it makes me just realize
how good I've had it over the years.
And I mean, I can't imagine what some people
like this dude have gone through, man. It's insane.
[A] [G]
[Bm] Tripping down all the steps [F#m] of the local school bus,
wishing I [A] didn't have to [G] go home.
[Bm] A vent was heating the house, [F#m] fire electric was on.
[A] I hoped I'd left money [G] for us,
[A] cause three days and I hadn't [G] had.
There [E] are so many people in this country
that are struggling hard and we see so much money
being thrown around by all these stupid billionaires
and we see certain people making so much money.
But the truth is, man, there's a lot of people
who ain't eating for three days.
There's a lot of people who, when it got super cold,
really, really struggled.
It makes me wanna do whatever I can.
I don't even know what you can do,
but to help people close to here
that are going through stuff like this, man,
it just breaks my [D] heart.
And [Bm] I'm tired of being nice.
[A] I just don't have it inside me.
[G] I can't take much more shit from you.
And I [Bm] have cut you out of my life.
[A] You love me when you need a high.
[G] I'm done spending my money on you.
You love me when you need a high.
I'm done spending my money on you.
And it sounds like he's cut her out of his life.
I think we've all had family members
who we've had to cut out, but man,
I just can't even fathom what that must feel like
when it's your mom.
I just can't even go, I don't know what that's like.
I just can't even believe that.
[Bm] Oh, and if dad was home, [F#m] then boy, we were gone.
[A] Driving around in these [G]
[Bm] cars.
We had peace of mind.
[F#m] If she couldn't find [A] us, we're all constantly [G] on the move.
And he's got a voice [A] now.
My whole life I've been running [G] from you.
[D] Oh yeah.
[Bm] And I'm tired of being [A] nice.
I just don't have it [G] inside me.
I can't take much more shit from you.
And [Bm] I have cut you out of my [A] life.
You love me when you need a [G] heart.
I'm done spending the money on you.
This [D#] reminds me so much of a, what's that guy?
Is it Ben Kaplan?
Ben Kappan?
The intensity that he just took it up 10 notches
and it just like a wave.
You being on a surfboard, it just takes you to that pain.
It transports you right to where he is.
And it was such a beautifully sung
and played first verse and chorus.
But then you feel the anger.
Then you feel the rage and the pain in his voice.
And it's just, man, it's so powerful.
[G] Yeah, I'm done now.
And [Bm] I'm done with you.
Come on.
[A]
And I'm [Bm] done with you, yeah.
[A]
[G] Raps, come on.
Yeah, and [Bm] I'm tired of being [A] nice.
I just don't have it inside [G] me.
Can't take more shit from you.
And I [Bm] have cut you out of my life.
[A] You love me when you need a [G] heart.
Done spending my money on you.
Cause I'm through with [Bm] you.
I mean, a super simple song,
not a lot of crazy chords or anything weird.
It just shoots straight to your heart,
straight to your gut.
For kids out there these days
that are going days without a meal,
kids these days who don't wanna get off the school bus
to go home because addiction,
it just wrecks so many families.
And it just inspires me so much
to figure out what I can do locally,
to figure out what I can do.
If y'all have any good charities that y'all [A] know of,
let me know in the comments
[G#] and I'll do some research on my own.
As a teacher, even working at a very nice school
that I work at,
there's just some kids going through some shit, man.
There's some kids that are really, really going through it.
And I have some students tell me sometimes
that being at school is like their oasis
and being at school is like paradise
where me as teachers, sometimes we complain so much
and we get so negative about how much money we make
and all that kind of stuff.
The fact that we can be not a father figure or mother figure
but we can be some type of positive impact in kids' lives.
It just reminds me of the job that I have
and I go back to school tomorrow for the first time
since the break.
And it just has really made me have a perspective change
that I don't know what people are going through.
None of us know what people are going through
when you sit by somebody at the bar,
when you brush balm at the library
or whatever it is that you do.
Let's just all be kinder in 2023.
Let's all show more grace.
Let's all remember that like him,
I didn't have that tough past
and the really intense upbringing that he has.
And it just encourages me to go
and be better to people this [B] year.
But hopefully [F#] when we listen to sad songs like this
that breaks our heart, it pushes us to [B] love people more.
That's what I'm gonna try to do.
Let me know what the next song [F#] I should check out is.
Hope y'all have an incredible 2023
and I'll see you somewhere on down the river.
