from England, Mark and Mark, Mark E [G] Smith and Mark Riley.
[Gb] Thanks for coming in fellas, [E] it's not that easy at this time of the day.
[E] You're, [Db] and we'll get to the concert tour in a sec, but [C] I've read things out of [Gb] the UK, like you won the awards for songwriting, band, singer, etc.
And I've also read over there that [B] one fella said that [C] you are still [Abm] angry and you're the last group in England to be still angry.
[A] Would you go along with that statement?
[E] Yeah, I think we're [Ab] the only group that's actually upset about certain things.
[G] So you're speaking your mind through your music?
[Db] Yeah, I get worse shit.
[B] What are some of the things that you're [Abm] upset about?
Obviously the unemployment thing over there is rotten at the moment.
[G] No, it's nothing [A] like that.
We [E] don't get [Gbm] political or anything like that.
It's just the [Abm] music industry over [G] there.
It sort of annoys [F] us.
Yeah, well I've also [E] seen some of the crits that weren't overly nice.
Like one of the guys that was in a well-known band years ago said he thought your record was awful.
And other people have [Ab] said Jeff Beck?
Yeah, Jeff Beck was in one of those.
[Ab] He can talk though, can't he?
He's good.
So what do you think when people like that say those sort of things?
It's good.
[B] That's [G] what it's for, to get the backs of the people like that really, you [Abm] know.
So you really are there to stir [E] things up a little [Em] and play music at the same [E] time.
Now here, the other night, I think 400 or 500 people were [Em] turned away at the first [D] gig you played at in Sydney.
[Ab] Now I wouldn't have thought that it happened for you.
I know you've had albums out and they've been played here on certain radio stations.
But I didn't think it would happen.
Did you expect that?
No, not at all, no.
But I mean, we're very much a live band.
Yeah.
It's not the same as the records at all.
It's the only reason we keep playing.
Did you expect that, Mark?
I didn't know what to expect, you know.
It's different everywhere [Eb] we go.
[Eb] What ideas had you [E] preconceived about Australia?
None, none at all.
Because I doubt any idea, you know.
It's the same in the States.
You don't know what you're going to get, so you find out when you get there.
You're just going to the other side of the world, not really knowing what's coming up.
What about yourself, Mark?
Yeah, I was surprised.
It's a lot more English, I suppose.
Very like home in a lot of ways, you know.
Especially north of England, where we come from.
How did you go in America?
How did they accept you?
It was okay, yeah.
Rave reviews?
Good reviews?
Good crowds?
Yeah, that's what I mean.
People went to see us there.
I mean, we haven't got big sales in America, you [Ab] know, but people came out to see us.
We're curious.
[Gb] We get a [E] sort of a
There's always a lot of curiosity.
So I think that's what's going to happen here.
I don't think it will reflect in sales, [Ab] but I think it does.
[E] You think more so the lives.
Obviously, [Em] after this one, with the start
There's a lot of [Gb] people there [Ab] tonight just coming to have a look, I think.
Yeah.
And you're the family in tonight, aren't you?
So that'll [Gb] be packed.
[Ab] Now, with that sort of thing happening for you, you're going to come [F] back again.
Is [E] there a chance you'll be back later this year, or will it have to be 83?
I don't know.
We don't think about it.
Don't make any plans.
We don't even know what we're going to do after this.
Really?
Well, I know you're going to New Zealand.
We're [Ab] going to try and go to Germany for the [Eb] beer festival.
For the beer festival?
Will you play there?
Yeah.
If we can.
If we're capable.
[Ab] You recorded a track called Iceland, and I [Fm] believe you did that in Iceland.
Am I correct?
Yeah.
Did you only go to [Ab] Iceland to record that one track,
or did you go there to [Abm] do a tour of Iceland?
We did three nights in Reykjavik.
[Gb] We played three nights, and somebody just bought the studio for us.
[Db]
You fellas really [E] don't look ahead and say,
Hey, we'll plan a [Ab] situation.
You're just doing it as it occurs.
Yeah.
And you're happy with that?
Yeah.
[Ab] Get to see the world, et cetera.
It's great, [E] isn't it?
I don't think I've got much further [Gb] to go,
because they're just happy [Gb] guys, and you're in the [E] country doing well.
[Ab] Have a good stay.
We're going to play a little bit of Container Driver,
and I must ask you, I just must ask this before we go to that.
Hex Induction Hour is the title of your current album.
Why the title, and what's it mean?
It's a word I made up.
You made it up?
Yeah.
It's like [Gb] an induction into the fall.
[E] Because we changed a bit on that LP.
We did about three or four before that.
[Eb] Well, we did five before that.
It's funny, I didn't realise that until the LP came out.
The hex means six as well, and it is a sixth album.
So the sixth induction hour, [A] and it lasts one hour, the album.
Go and get it, and if you can, catch them.
What states do you do, do you know?
Well, I mean, you don't know where you're going, so how would you know?
I think they're doing the three states in the east.
Try and catch them, the four lovely blokes, Mark and Mark.
Thank you.
Let's have a look at this, the Container Driver.
Just a portion of it, then we go to the Divinyls.
