When I was [E] 17, I wanted nothing [D] more than to be signed to a label and to go on tour
with all my favorite bands.
I think I sent four [E] copies.
I sent one [E] to Jade Tree, one to Saddle Creek, [G] one to Arts and [A] Crafts, and I think I sent
one to Merge.
And nobody got back, and I was just like, [D] well, that's it.
I give up.
I'm just going to have to do this all [Bm] myself.
[Em] [G]
[D] [Bm] This [Em] is the headroom.
This has sort of been our home base [G] since pre-production for the last record, Painted Shut.
We've been practicing [Bm] here for that record, and [D] we've been practicing here ever since.
[G] This is where we actually tracked the last record, and then we finished it in Brooklyn.
[A] [D] Since then, this has [G] been our ground base for writing the next record.
We have all of our toys at our [Bm] fingertips, and it's [B] just been a good creative spot to
relax [E] and dim the [D] lights and see if we can think of anything smart.
[A] [B]
I couldn't tell you what [D] it is about Philadelphia.
I do think that proximity to [A] so many other cities, I [Bm] mean, it's three hours from D [G].C.,
it's two hours [D] from Baltimore, it's two hours from New York.
It's just this perfect in the middle [A] area.
[B]
I grew up half an [Eb] hour away, so [D] every time we'd come to the Philly, it was usually the
weekend, so it was like a [Gb] big event, you know, a [Bm] show.
We're playing a show, and as soon as you [B] started to see the [Em] skyline, it was like, something
crazy is going to happen tonight.
Who knows where I'm going to end [G] up.
This is going to be great.
[D]
It was [Em] definitely a magical feeling.
[D] I just think any city where the rent is comparatively [Em] cheap enough to other major cities, artists
are going to move there and [G] build communities.
[D]
The show scene was so [Em] welcoming.
I personally never felt an [E] amount of pressure [D] from anyone besides myself to do well or be
amazing, just like everybody was like, yeah, so-and-so just learned to play.
We have a pretty [E] good group of talented [B] friends, you know, [D] and we all pretty much know what
[E] each other is doing and hang [D] out.
It's a good community.
[E]
Yeah, and a lot of us [G] got to be like, not talented together.
So it's been really cool to like, watch [D] each other get better.
[E] I think we're really fortunate that everything happened for [Dm] us, even though it was pretty
fast, like the past two years, a lot's happened.
[A] We've amassed a certain [D] level of confidence and self-assuredness that, [B] you know what,
we [Em] can do this.
I [G] would tell any young person, like, be as delusional as [Bm] you possibly can.
Have lots [Em] of delusions about what you can do, because you're probably [D] bad at it right now.
You know, like, I was terrible, [Bm] but the thing [Em] that keeps drawing me back is the idea of
writing songs and recording them.
