Hi, this is TJR for TJRmusic.com, and you may be aware of the fact that right now there
is a copyright infringement lawsuit against the Led Zeppelin song Stairway to Heaven.
The plaintiff in this case is a band called Spirit, and the song is called Taurus.
Now Taurus was released by the band Spirit two years prior to Stairway to Heaven.
They both have a lot of similarities.
Both songs are in the key of A minor, [N] and they both feature an A minor chord with a
descending bass line.
This is not an uncommon thing, but I thought I would do a little video demonstration on
the guitar that would show both the similarities and the differences [Em] between these two compositions.
I'm going to start [C] with Taurus by the band Spirit.
[B] Pardon me if I'm a little rough on this, I just [Em] learned this a [B] few minutes ago.
So here we go.
[Am] [E]
[C]
[F] [Am]
[D] [G] [Am]
[G#] [C]
[F] [Am]
[D] [G] [B]
Now that's [C#] Taurus by Spirit, and Stairway to Heaven goes like this.
[Am] [E]
[C] [F#] [D]
[F]
[G] [Am] Now [Em] here's where they're similar, and here's where they're different.
They both have this A minor chord [F#] with a descending bass line that [A] goes,
[G#m] [G] [F#]
[N] [B] but whereas Taurus goes,
[Am] stays on the A minor, [E] [C]
[D] [G]
Stairway to [Am] Heaven goes on [E]
[C] the A minor, [E] then goes to D over with an
[F#] F sharp in the [D] bass, and then goes to an F [F] major 7th, [G]
[Am] [G] goes from G [Am] to A minor, like that.
[C#] Also, Stairway to Heaven, while having that same [A] descending bass melody, [G#m]
[Gm] [F#] has [Gm] a second
melody ascending the scale, [A] with the A starting on A,
[Em] [C] [F#]
[A] from [C] A to B to C to F [F#] sharp.
[C#] So, [Am] together.
[E] [C] [Bm]
[D] [F] [G]
[A]
Now, [N] I should point out that having an A minor chord with a descending bass line, or having
any minor chord with a descending bass line, is not an uncommon thing.
Lots of songs do this.
Led Zeppelin did it on Led Zeppelin 1 with Babe I'm Gonna Leave You.
They had the, [Am] started with an A minor, to an A minor [C] over a G, [F] to an A minor with [F#m] an F sharp,
[Am] [F] to an F, [C] [E] to an E.
[Em] Slightly different.
Instead of descending every half step, it [A] goes A [G] to whole step G, [D#] to half step [F#] F sharp,
[F] to half step F, to half step [Em] E.
Like [A] that.
[C] [F#]
[F] [E] Like that.
[N] Babe I'm Gonna Leave You sounds completely different from Stairway to Heaven.
They both use a similar type of chord progression, some slight differences, but they're phrased completely differently.
Coming very close to sounding like Babe I'm Gonna Leave You is George Harrison's While
My Guitar Gently Weeps, which was released prior to Led Zeppelin's Babe I'm Gonna Leave
You, which goes, [Am] I look [C] at you all, see [F#] the [Am] love that's sleeping, while my [G] guitar [D] gently weeps.
[E]
Similar but different.
[Am] A minor, A minor [G] with a G, [C] [Em] A minor [F#] with an F sharp, [Am] to an F [F] major seventh,
[Am] to A minor,
well, [G] to G, to [D] D, [E] to E.
Similar but different.
[B] Phrased completely differently, different melodies.
They become different songs, but they use similar chord patterns.
They also have variations too.
I think what is striking between Taurus and Stairway to Heaven is how similar they are
in their [Am] phrasing.
[G#] [C]
[A] [Am] [E] [C]
[F#] [D]
[Em] They're both finger picked along the same meter, da da da da [A#m] da da da da, and they both
have that descending bass line playing the same [G] thing, you know.
[A] [G#m] [G]
[F#] They both also, if you [N] listen to them orally, the recordings, you'll hear they have a similar
tone, a similar kind of Renaissance, medieval feel to them.
Now as far as what I think of this plagiarism lawsuit, I'm not going to get into that here.
I am going to be doing an in-depth analysis of the album Led Zeppelin IV on my other YouTube
channel, which is Music Worth Buying, and you can click the link and go there and you
can watch, listen to that video where I discuss Led Zeppelin IV in depth, and where I discuss
the whole plagiarism thing and where I discuss what I think of it, if you'd like.
And I would encourage you to subscribe to my other channel, Music Worth Buying, just
like I would encourage you to subscribe here to my channel here, TJR The Original.
Anyways, I hope that you found this video informative and let you kind of examine the
differences and the similarities so that you can kind of better make up your own mind how
you feel about this.
