_ _ [D] Hey guys, Chas Burks here with [Em] GoGuitarLive [B] and today I'm going to show you a little finger
picking [N] finger style version of Stand By Me.
So if you've never listened to this, pick up the Otis Redding version or download it
or watch it on YouTube, whatever, and listen to it.
And so we're going to cover the bass and the chords.
So let's go ahead and get started.
OK, first things first.
I've got my capo on the second fret.
So right there.
Alright.
And again, if you watch my videos, I play up here during the instructional part so you
can actually see what I'm doing [A] with my both hands here.
So this is a finger picking song.
It's not a strummer.
You could try and strum it.
I'm sure it sounds just as good.
But for right now, we're going to do just a finger, just a couple fingers in it.
And I think it's pretty easy [Fm] after you get it.
Alright, so let's just go over the chords real quick.
First we're going to play G.
And the G I'm going to [Bb] use here is going to be these [A] two.
Some people like to play G like this, with just your finger on the first [Bb] string of the third fret.
But I'm actually going to use both of these fingers right here on the _ [Gb] third fret of the
first and the second [A] string. _
Then finish it off.
Okay, the next one [Gb] is E minor. _ _
_ _ [D] _ C and [E] D7. _
_ _ And any chord [Ab] chart that you [Bb] might find on the internet, they're all going to [A] have these
chords on there.
Just make sure you're playing this G instead of this one.
Okay, [F] so anyway, [Bb] the first thing you need to know is the bass run.
Well, actually, let's go over the chords first.
So the first thing you need to know is how the chords are laid out.
We have two measures of G.
[A] One, two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.
Two [B] measures of E minor.
[Gbm]
One, two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.
One [D] measure of C.
One, two, three, four.
And you're going to just keep your finger there.
We're going to go to D7 [Bb] now.
One [Ab] measure.
One, two, three, four.
And then two more [A] G's.
Two, three, four.
Two, three, four.
[Bb] So what you have is you have two measures of G, [C] two [Gbm] measures of E minor, a measure of
C, [Gb] a measure of D7, and two [A] measures of G.
[Bb] Okay, [A] so, one, two, three, four.
One, two, three, [Gbm] four.
Two, three, four.
Two, [D] three, four.
C, two, three, [E] four.
D7, two, three, four.
And [A] back to G.
Three, four.
Two, three, four.
Okay, now, if you can [Bbm] just play that over and over, you've got the entire song.
Nothing else to it.
[A] _ [Gb] So, now let's go over the bass notes.
We're going to go, for G, this is what's going to happen every time you play G. _
Zero, two, three on the E string, the low E string.
_ [A] _ _
_ [Bb] _ _ _ _ [A] _ [Ab] _ [A] _
One more three at the end.
[Ab] Now this is just the bass notes.
If we can get that, we're going to combine it all here in a minute.
So, zero, two, three, and then another three.
[A] _ _ _
You [Am] hear the rhythm?
_ _ _ [A] _ _
Okay, [Gb] now we're going to walk down to E minor.
That's two of those, so that counts for our two measures of G.
Now we're going to go down to E minor.
[A] So, there's three, two, zero.
_ [Ab] _ [Gb]
Zero, zero.
Three, two, zero.
Okay, for the second one, we're going to just go zero, two, zero.
[Gb] And then another zero. _ _ _
_ _ So far we have [Ab] zero, [A] two, three, three, twice.
Now you're going to walk it down.
[Gb] Three, two, zero, zero.
Zero, two, zero, zero.
Top string.
Okay, now we're going to go to the C.
[F] We're going to go, kind of like how we did to the G, it's zero, two, three.
[D] _
And another three at the end of that.
[Dm] Which we're going to replace with chords, [F] so I'm going to show you how to do [D] that. _
Okay, and then we're going to go to the D string, because that's one measure, that's all you get [Gb] for C.
The D string, this is what you do for D7.
[B] Is you're going to play [E] _ _
the D string right here, and then go zero, two, zero.
_ And another zero.
And those [A] extra notes, _ _ now you could do that, you could just strum a G. _
_ _ _ And then down.
[Gbm] _ _ _
_ _ And then C.
[D] _ _ And now you've got to switch over to the D7.
[E] _ And back to G.
[A] _ _
_ _ Now don't switch to E minor, you've got to go back and start with G.
Because if you remember, [E] it's G, E minor, C, D7, and G.
So you have another set of G at the end, so it feels like an extra long one.
So now if we're going to use our fingers, we're going to play, we're pretty much just going to stick to the second and third string.
With these two fingers, we're just going to pull those, and our thumb's going to do the [Ab] walking.
[A] _ _
_ _ _ You can play both of these, you can play the sixth string, [F] and the second and third string.
_ [A] _ _ [Ab] _ [A] _ _
Just like that.
So here's what we have. _ _ _
_ _ [A] Chord, chord, walk down to E [Ab] minor.
[Gbm] _ _
_ _ _ Now we're going to walk up to [D] C, _ _ _ to D7.
_ [Bb] _ _ [E] _
_ _ [E] _ Okay?
And then back to G.
[A] _ _
_ _ And you start over again with G. _ _ _
_ _ _ [Gbm] _ _ _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
[A] _ [Gb] Okay, so that's pretty much the whole thing.
Now if you get the rhythm, [A] _ _
_ it sounds good, it fills out really well.
If you want to get a little string noise [Bb] in between your riff and then the [A] chord. _ _ _ _ _
_ [Gbm] _ _ _ _ _ [D] _ _
_ _ [E] _ _ _ [A] _ _
[Bb] Alright, you should [Bb] be good to go.
Hopefully that answers some questions on that song, and that should be a fun one to mess around with.
