Step One by Stark Sands chords
Start Jamming...
is my first act solo.
It's called Step One.
And I thought I'd tell you the way that it was created.
We did the show in Chicago for six weeks.
And typically you take a musical out of town,
it's a safe place to sort of work out the kinks and improve it
before you take it to the big time, which is here on Broadway.
[B] And there was a song called, what [F] was it called?
[Bb] I Come to the Rescue.
I [Abm] [N] come to the rescue and it was one of the first songs that Cindy wrote for the show
before there was a full show, before there was a whole lot of anything,
certainly before there were any actors involved.
And when I came on board the project, I sang the song and it was part of it
until we were doing the show in Chicago.
And it just didn't suit my voice really.
It was a little bit too low for me, so I couldn't really soar on the high stuff
and it just wasn't impressive.
And on top of that, the lyrics were a little too, I don't know,
the song was called I Come to the Rescue and it basically was,
here I come to save the day.
I've done it, I did it, problem solved.
And if you've seen the show, you know that I was running around making my very first move.
I haven't really done it.
It's a little bit braggadocious for a guy who's never done this before.
And so the audience wasn't responding the way that we wanted them to.
And after four weeks of doing this on stage, Jerry Mitchell told Cindy,
go write this kid a hit song.
Write him a [C] radio single.
Write him a hit song with a hook.
And she texted me that night and said,
what songs did you listen to when you were growing up and learning to sing?
When you were 13 years old, what were the favorite albums you had?
What songs did you sing along with in the shower?
And [N] so I gave her a list of influences, ranging from [F] Weezer to [Eb] Cat Stevens,
Elton [N] John, Stone Temple Pilots, like quite a variety of things.
And she studied all of that music.
And I had specific songs and I had specific albums that meant a lot to me
and that really did shape the way that I sing and the style that I sing.
And two days later, she called me back, or she texted me back and said,
I'm sending you a voice memo.
It's [Cm] me singing [Db] this new song.
So I have a voice memo [N] in my phone that is Cindy Lauper, just a guitar,
singing this song you're about to hear.
And I really hope you like it.
And it was awesome because it does have a hook.
[E] It's Billy's favorite song to sing.
I was trying to get him to sing it instead of me.
Because he has his [Eb] own spin on [N] it.
Anyway, this song is called Step One.
[Db] [F]
[Bb] [Db] [Ebm] This place [F] is time for a shake up.
[Gb] Look at me wake [Bb] up.
Taking [Db] control.
This is a new [F] beginning.
[Gb] My gear is spinning.
[Bb] Let's rock and [Db] roll.
Just [F] put one [Gb] foot [Bb] on putting [Ab] forward.
[Bb] Should be a zero, but now I'm pretty [Ab] few.
And I will be the hero who reinvents the hill.
[Gb] I may be [Dbm] facing the [Ebm] impossible.
I may be [Db] chasing after [Gb] miracles.
I may [Bb] be the steepest mountain [Ab] to
[Gb] overcome.
[Ab] [Gb] [Db] This is Step One.
[Gb]
[Db] This is Step One.
[Ab] [Db] [F] I can't hear you.
[Gb] You can't [Bb] see [Ab] where this [Db] goes.
I've got [F] the knowledge and know-how.
[Gb] Don't stop the show [Bb] now.
[Fm] Don't stop the [Db] flow.
Just put one [Gb] foot [Bbm] on putting [Ab] forward.
[Bbm] I'm still living [Bbm] limbo, never dying to [Ab] begin.
But now I'm safe to swim, so I'd better dive right in.
[Bb] I may be [Db] facing the impossible.
[Eb] I may be [Fm] chasing after miracles.
[Gb] I may be the steepest [Bbm] mountain [Ab] to [Gb] [Ab] overcome.
[Db] This is Step One.
[Ab] [Bbm] It's not just a factory.
[Ab] This is my [Db] family.
No one's gonna shut [Gb] us down.
Not while Charlie Price is around.
[Db] I may be facing the [Ebm] impossible.
I may be [Db] chasing after miracles.
[Gb] I may be [Bbm] the steepest mountain [Ab] to [Gb] overcome.
[A] I may be [D] facing the impossible.
[E] I may be [D] chasing after miracles.
[G] I may [Bm] be the steepest mountain [A] to [G] overcome.
[A] [D] This is Step One.
[Bm] Look what [A] Charlie [D] has [G] done.
[D] This is Step One.
